We are now looking for an Associate/Full Professor, Design Anthropology Design Anthropology is a thriving field straddling design research, ethnography and anthropology. It investigates practices, cultures, social formations and design with ethnographic methods, while incorporating insights from the design field about how the material and the conceptual aspects of social life are entangled. The key foci for design anthropology at Aalto are the processes of imagining, producing and making design outcomes, and the systems of signification that inform design and are reproduced by design. It can explore and develop different framings and styles of design, from DIY or community-based design to the high-tech and commercialized fields of design. An anthropological approach is significant for design in general and for the Department of Design at Aalto University in particular. The study of users, use, and design-in-action is a cornerstone of all work at the Department of Design. This aligns with the Department of Design's commitment to fostering inclusivity and societal dialogues through design, and to educating broad-minded change-makers. Your competency and goals We are looking to hire an ambitious and experienced colleague who has capacity to lead and collaborate in the continuous renewal of design education and design research, including: Demonstrated competence and excellent track record in design anthropology research Experience and high competence in university education Demonstrated ability to gain competed research funding Doctoral degree in design, anthropology or in a related relevant field Experience in academic responsibilities in university education and research management Experience in practical applications of design anthropology (e.g. in industry, public sector or community initiatives) is considered as an advantage Excellent skills in English, and Finnish proficiency is considered as an advantage. Your network and team The professor of design anthropology will work closely with the 18 professors and 12 lecturers at the department of design, particularly with MA programmes in collaborative and industrial design, creative sustainability and BA programme in design and media. Experience and ambitions We are looking for a person who will continue pursuing their excellent research and holds a collaborative attitude and an interest in inter-disciplinary collaboration, including collaboration beyond academia. Our expectation is that the candidate will join a research group or take responsibility for leading or establishing one. The professor will teach courses and supervise students across BA, MA and DA levels. Description The Robot Learning & Control Lab (REAL Lab) at NYU Abu Dhabi is seeking an outstanding Post-Doctoral Associate to contribute to cutting-edge research in robot intelligence, machine learning, and AI-driven manipulation. This position offers the opportunity to work on real-world robotic systems and develop novel algorithms at the intersection of robot learning, control, and AI for physical systems. The postdoc will work on projects focusing on one or more of the following: Robot Learning & Autonomy – Developing algorithms that allow robots to learn (via exploration or imitation) from interaction, adapt to new tasks, and generalize across environments. Dexterous Manipulation – Advancing robotic grasping, in-hand manipulation, and adaptable object handling in complex real-world scenarios, including those involving deformable objects and uncertain conditions.. Semantic Navigation & Mapping – Designing solutions for robot navigation, for Mobile Manipulators, that integrate environmental semantics and spatial reasoning. AI for Physical Systems – Leveraging machine learning and AI to improve performance, safety, and adaptability of robots, autonomous vehicles, and other intelligent machines. Safe and Certified Control for manipulation: Designing control algorithms that ensure passivity, Lyapunov stability, and safety for human-robot collaboration. Qualifications: Applicants must have a PhD in Robotics, Control Engineering, Machine Learning, AI, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field. Strong focus on robot manipulation learning & control, and differential geometry is a plus. Knowledge of safe control methods including Lyapunov stability, barrier functions, and certified learning frameworks. Hands-on experience with robotic manipulators (preferebly Franka Emika R3 robots) and real-world experimentation. Demonstrate a high degree of self-motivation, research-oriented thinking, and a drive to operationalize robotic systems for real-world tasks. Strong publication record in top-tier venues: ICRA, IROS, RA-L, T-RO, IJRR, CoRL, NeurIPS, RSS, CDC, TAC. Proficiency in Python, C++, ROS, and machine learning frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow. Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in an interdisciplinary research environment. Description Laboratory for Advanced Neuroengineering and Translational Medicine at New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) seeks to recruit a postdoctoral research associate to join this new initiative focusing on designing and developing novel medical devices for ultimate human use. Laboratory for Advanced Neuroengineering and Translational Medicine oversees a variety of exciting projects developing new treatments and diagnostics for cardiovascular, neurologic, and metabolic diseases. The successful applicant will join a number of fascinating projects on engineering novel approaches to modulate physiology and neural activity in the brain, gastrointestinal (GI) tract, and other peripheral organs. These projects have a high potential for translation towards treating a variety of neurologic and metabolic disorders. These approaches entail device design and manufacturing, drug conjugation, neuroscience, and preclinical model experiments. The candidate will work in a dynamic, multidisciplinary environment alongside PhD-level engineers and scientists, graduate students, and full-time researchers. They will also have the chance to contribute to other projects within CENTMED, working on cutting-edge initiatives spanning metabolic, cardiovascular, and neurologic diseases. This position offers an exciting opportunity to make a meaningful impact on next-generation surgical technologies, bridging the gap between engineering innovation and clinical application.
