The School comprises the Departments of Strings, Keyboard, Voice, Woodwind/Brass/Percussion (‘WBP’), Composition, Chinese Music, Conducting and Cultural Leadership, Academic Studies and Junior Music. The Head of Academic Studies in Music will be a distinguished educator and academic leader, dedicated to shaping the future of music education, academic, and contextual studies within the School of Music. Building on the department’s existing strengths, the Head will work collaboratively with other senior staff to drive forward innovative developments in music education and research. This includes overseeing and enhancing curricula across all programme levels (Junior Music, post-secondary, undergraduate, and postgraduate), promoting interdisciplinary collaborations, and fostering an environment of excellence in teaching and research. Reporting to the Dean of the School of Music, the appointee will provide academic leadership and quality assurance in contextual studies and musical research. The appointee is expected to lead curriculum development, course review, and enhancement of learning, teaching, assessment and feedback across all programmes, provide guidance to faculty, and strengthen the School’s international networks and collaborative projects. Applicants should have: (a) A recognised degree in Music or equivalent qualification (preferably a doctoral degree in music education, contextual studies, or relevant disciplines); (b) A strong professional background and extensive professional experience as a music educator and/or researcher (c) In-depth knowledge of current trends in music education, contextual studies, and performing arts research, with a focus on innovative pedagogical approaches; (d) Internationally recognised standing and a good industry network; (e) An excellent teaching record in conservatoire/university contexts across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Experience of teaching on pre-college music programmes would be an advantage; (f) A successful track record of leadership and ability within an educational institution or similar performing arts-based organisation, including experience in curriculum design, implementation, and programme development according to established quality assurance frameworks; (g) Solid experience in managing teams and collaborative work in cross-cultural and cross-disciplinary contexts; (h) The ability to advise and supervise undergraduate and postgraduate research projects; (i) Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organisational skills; and (j) An excellent command of both written and spoken English. Fluency in Chinese (including Putonghua and Cantonese) is an advantage. TERMS OF APPOINTMENT Appointment will be on a two-year renewable contract, subject to performance and mutual agreement. A gratuity payment equals up to 15% of the total basic salary earned during the contract period may be granted upon satisfactory completion of the full contract period. The amount of gratuity payable will be the sum which, when added to the Academy’s contribution to a Mandatory Provident Fund (MPF) scheme as required by the MPF Schemes Ordinance, equals 15% of the total basic salary drawn during the contract period. Fringe benefits include leave, medical, and dental benefits. The starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. About us The post will be based in the KCL Social, Genetic, and Developmental Psychiatry Centre, within the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience (IoPPN). The centre offers a diverse research environment that is open, welcoming and supportive to all. The faculty-wide initiatives are supported by an active Diversity & Inclusion Team. The Social, Genetic & Developmental Psychiatry (SGDP) Centre is uncovering the genetic and environmental influences on mental health and psychiatric disorders. Our research encompasses behavioural genetics, molecular genetics, experimental psychology and psychiatry, and neuroimaging. Scientists at the SGDP lead some of the UK’s foremost longitudinal cohort and twin studies including TEDS, eRISK, Dunedin, IMAGEN and GLAD. The NIHR BioResource Centre Maudsley leads the NIHR BioResource for Mental Health. We focus on recruiting participants experiencing mental health conditions, as well as healthy people. Alongside GLAD MHG and The GLAD study, Prof. Breen’s team boasts an accomplished portfolio of clinical and genetic studies which aim to improve treatment and outcomes for those affected by anxiety, depression, eating disorders and other mental health conditions. About the role The Deputy Research Coordinator will lead day-to-day laboratory operations and biosample logistics for GLAD-MHG: establish site readiness, oversee sample flows from collection to accessioning, embed ISO 17025-aligned quality practices, and drive continual improvements in throughput, cost, and auditability. Prof. Breen’s team boasts ambitious and accomplished portfolio of clinical and genetic studies which aim to improve treatment and outcomes for those affected by anxiety, depression, eating disorders and other mental health conditions. Despite being a leading cause of disability worldwide, Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is an underserved market segment with significant unmet medical need, GLAD MHG will leverage proven success and substantial investment from KCL, the NIHR Maudsley BRC, and NIHR BioResource in the GLAD study to create a trial-ready dataset integrating detailed phenotyping, multi-omics, and medical records to support MDD precision psychiatry. The role requires a skilled operational manager, with the ability to forge effective working relationships with collaborators and interdisciplinary academic teams working on related MHG workstreams. This is a full-time post available from 1st of April 2026 and you will be offered a fixed term contract initially for 2 years, that, with the possibility of extension. About us Dementia is one of the greatest health challenge of our century. To date there is no way to prevent it or even slow its progression, and there is an urgent need to fill the knowledge gap in our basic understanding of the diseases that cause it. The UK Dementia Research Institute (UK DRI) is the biggest UK initiative driving forward research to fill this gap. We are a globally leading multidisciplinary research institute of 850 staff investigating the spectrum of neurodegenerative disorders causing dementia, with laboratory-based research groups located at University College London, the University of Cambridge, Cardiff University, Edinburgh University, Imperial College London, and King’s College London. Researchers at the UK DRI at King’s use innovative approaches to explore the biological mechanisms involved in neurodegenerative diseases. Their goal is to defeat dementia by uncovering vital new knowledge that will lead to the design of smarter diagnostics and effective treatments. The team aim to understand the fundamental biological processes involved in dementia at a molecular level – and to use that knowledge to design new ways to diagnose and treat disease more precisely. About the role A new position is available for a highly motivated and skilled Research Associate in the Basic and Clinical Neuroscience research group led Professor Marc-David Ruepp. The successful candidate will support translational projects aimed at correcting neurodegenerative phenotypes , with a particular emphasis on RNA-mediated splicing correction. Professor Ruepp’s group aims to uncover how RNA dysmetabolism contributes to neurodegeneration, with a focus on elucidating the molecular determinants of FUS toxicity in ALS, identifying translational therapeutic targets, and developing innovative strategies to advance these findings toward clinical application. Some of the key skills involved include; Molecular cloning and generation of RNA-based splicing modulators Performing cell-based screens to assess efficiency of regulators using high-throughput imaging Conducting high quality research under the supervision of Marc-David Ruepp, and in collaboration with other members of the Ruepp lab. Undertake any other reasonable duties that may be requested by the PI. To present findings in regular group meetings to the PI and colleagues. Work in a collaborative manner, sharing knowledge and expertise within the team, department and with collaborators. This is a full-time post (35 hours per week) funded for an 18-month duration with the possibility of further extension.
