Your working environment: As a postdoctoral research assistant at the Department of Romance Studies, you will collaborate in research and teaching as part of Prof. Dr. Judith Frömmer’s team. Our research focuses on French and Italian literature and media studies, with a historical emphasis on the Early Modern Period and Early Modernity and systematic focuses in the field of political theory and semantics, historical narrative research, and inter- and transmedial phenomena. Current research projects are dedicated to Machiavelli, the translation of early modern love poetry, and the poetics of minor characters. The team currently consists of a professor, a postdoctoral research assistant, a doctoral research assistant, an organisational assistant, and other staff members working on the third-party funded project “Petrarch in Global Translation: A Genealogy of Western Love.” The department is part of the Faculty of Philological and Cultural Studies and offers Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD degree programs in five Romance languages and teacher-training courses for secondary schools in three languages (French, Italian and Spanish). More than 100 academic staff members and a few thousand students appreciate the diversity of subjects, internationality, outstanding research projects and interdisciplinary cooperation. The position is limited to five years. Your future tasks: Active participation in research, teaching & administration, which means: You develop an independent research profile. You are involved in research projects and scientific studies, particularly digital projects in your working group. You publish in internationally recognised organs of publication, give lectures and organise scientific events. You apply for projects and raise third-party funds. You prepare and complete a publication-ready habilitation or an equivalent qualification. You hold courses independently within the scope of the provisions of the collective bargaining agreement. You supervise your students. You participate in evaluation measures and in quality assurance. You take on administrative tasks in research, teaching and administration. This is part of your personality: You have completed a doctorate with a focus on Romance Studies or General and Comparative Literature, with a focus on Italian and French literature. You have experience working with texts from earlier eras, historical knowledge (especially in the field of early modern period), and expertise in the field of digital humanities and AI. Excellent knowledge of Italian and French is essential. A good knowledge of Latin and English is desirable. The appointee will work on interdisciplinary projects related to the development of novel therapeutic agents targeting cancer-related proteins for therapy. The project aims to uncover how animals with miniature brains can efficiently process multisensory stimuli. Using a powerful combination of techniques – high-resolution imaging, intracellular recordings and behavioural experiments – this project aims to uncover how beetles detect and respond to deep-red stimuli and infrared (heat) information. Results will provide new information about evolution and function of sensory systems and have the potential to unlock biological solutions for modern problems, including improved efficiency of sensors and image processing. The Research Officer will lead field expeditions to collect insects, primarily based in the mallee regions of Australia (particularly Western Australia) and forests in North America or Europe. They will have the opportunity to contribute to anatomical (e.g. electron microscopy), physiological (e.g., electrophysiology), and/or behavioural experiments (e.g. field studies, controlled laboratory studies). The Research Officer will join a world-class team and benefit from collaboration and training with leading scientists across multiple institutions, including Dr Patricia Jusuf (University of Melbourne), Prof Gregor Belušič (University of Ljubljana), and Prof Kentaro Arikawa (Graduate University for Advanced Studies, SOKENDAI), with planned research visits to these groups during the project.
