Meiji Gakuin University is a Christian university established in the cities of Tokyo and Yokohoma in Japan. The history of the university dates back to 1863 when it was founded as Hepburn School. Currently, the institute of higher learning is a full-fledged university that offers graduate and undergraduate courses in various faculties ranging from economics to psychology. The university places a strong emphasis on its founding principle: contributing and transforming the society. The university hosts a number of exchange programmes every year and has established partnerships with universities across the world. Meiji Gakuin University offers a programme called the buddy programme, which offers international students the opportunity to experience Japanese culture. The university also has several student clubs that organise a wide array of student events through different clubs like glee Club and MCM Hitsuji Club. The university mainly comprises of two campuses the Shiro Kane Campus and the Yokohoma Campus. These campuses have all sorts of amenities like recreational centres, libraries and a number of support centres for career development, medical advice and counselling. The Institute of Artificial Intelligence and Brain Sciences (IAIBS), currently operating as the Institute of Collaborative Innovation and scheduled for formal establishment in August 2026, invites applications for the position of Full/Associate/Assistant Professor in Data Science. IAIBS aims to become an internationally leading interdisciplinary research institute by advancing deep integration and innovation of artificial intelligence and brain sciences. It aspires to establish itself as a key hub for AI and brain science in the Greater Bay Area and globally. It is expected that high-profile research work will be carried out through these platforms to produce a number of key scientific outputs and discoveries with world influence. Qualifications Prospective applicants should have a PhD degree in Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, Data Science, or related disciplines, preferably with postdoctoral research experience from globally renowned universities, and a strong record of internationally recognized publications. The following three areas are the main priority categories but are not exhaustive; outstanding candidates in closely related areas of interdisciplinary AI and data science are also encouraged to apply: (1) AI for Science, including AI/ML for scientific discovery, foundation models for science, scientific machine learning, and AI applications in materials, chemistry, biology, healthcare, simulation, or hypothesis generation; (2) AI for Society, including AI and data science for smart cities, public health, education, sustainability, social good, human-centered AI, decision support, computational social science, or AI agents for public services; and (3) AI Governance, including responsible and trustworthy AI, AI safety, fairness, accountability, transparency, privacy, security, regulatory compliance, auditing, risk assessment, AI ethics, and data governance. Priority will be given to candidates with strong research experience and demonstrable societal, scientific, or institutional impact. The selected candidate is expected to assume duty in 2026. Remuneration A taxable annual remuneration starting from MOP1,250,200 (approximately USD154,350) for the position of Full Professor, MOP1,052,800 (approximately USD129,980) for the position of Associate Professor and MOP855,400 (approximately USD105,600) for the position of Assistant Professor will be commensurate with the successful applicants’ academic qualification and relevant professional experience. The current local maximum income tax rate is 12% but is effectively around 5% - 7% after various discretionary exemptions.
