The Centre for Microbiology and Environmental Systems Science (CeMESS) at the University of Vienna conducts basic research on the structure and function of microbiomes at an internationally leading level. We are looking for a technician (m, f, d) to support our laboratory team and offer a stimulating and family-friendly working environment. This position is for 20 hours per week and is initially a 12-month fixed-term contract. The contract may be converted to a permanent position if both parties agree. Your personal sphere of influence: The Division of Microbiology and Ecosystem Science (DoME, https://dome.univie.ac.at/) is seeking a lab technician (m, f, d) for a varied field of activity. The focus will be on the cultivation and molecular biological characterization of protists, bacteria, and viruses, as well as the support of scientific projects within the research group of Univ.-Prof. Matthias Horn (https://dome.univie.ac.at/horn). The research group investigates the biology, ecology, and evolution of microorganisms and viruses that infect protists. Your future tasks: The focus of your tasks lies in supporting ongoing research projects. This includes the cultivation and microscopic/molecular biological characterization of amoebae and other protists, their bacterial symbionts, as well as giant viruses. You will also participate in training students on molecular biological methods and equipment, as well as in data analysis. You are an active, communicative member of our research group and support our students and scientific staff. This is part of your profile: You hold a bachelor's degree or have completed training in the field of biology, biochemistry, or another natural science field (e.g., certified BTA/CTA technical training), or an equivalent qualification. B1 Grundstufe (praedoc) Limited until: 30.09.2029 Reference no.: 5577 The research group “Experimental Meteorology” led by Manfred Dorninger is part of the Department of Meteorology and Geophysics of the Faculty for Geosciences, Geography and Astronomy. One of our main research directions is to study the dynamics and thermodynamics governing the life cycle of cold-air pools in closed but also open basins. Our “home basin” is the Gruenloch basin in the Alps known as the place with the lowest measured temperatures ever in the Alps with -52,6 deg C. A unique observational data set over more than 25 years of data from this spot but also from other basins waits for a comprehensive analysis in all physical aspects of cold-air pools. Modelling of the processes with a LES (Large Eddy Simulation) model will also be part of your tasks. We highly value collaboration, teaching and outreach. Your personal sphere of influence: We are looking for a highly motivated and creative doctoral student to explore fundamental questions of the dynamic and thermodynamic processes of the life-cycle of cold-air pools. Possible topics include the mechanisms that allow cold-air lake oscillations, the role of the ground heat flux for snow melt processes, the influence of the vegetation type and the impact of the air masses on the temperature minima. Whatever the topic, you will also implement and run LES (Large Eddy Simulation) models to combine the modelling work with theory and mechanistic understanding. To build-up your network and foster collaborations you will start by organising a workshop on cold-air pooling in all aspects at our department. It will be our pleasure to define the concrete research focus together, giving you the possibility to shape your own project. Your future tasks: Active participation in research and teaching, which means: You conduct research on the topic of your thesis. We develop mechanistic, predictive models of cellular decision-making to address both fundamental and translational challenges in oncology, including drug resistance, pathway rewiring, and the discovery of new therapeutic vulnerabilities. Beyond cancer specifically, our research explores broader questions regarding cell fate decisions, the hidden dynamics of complex signalling networks, and their underlying regulatory mechanisms. Our approach is deliberately cancer-agnostic, focusing on principles that generalize across various tumour types while exploring the governing and design principles that dictate complex signalling behaviour. A defining feature of our group is the tight integration of dynamic network modelling with experimental and clinical insight, enabling us to move beyond mere description and toward robust, actionable prediction. Experience To thrive in this role, you will likely have the following skills and experience: Strong background in applied mathematics, systems biology, computational biology, or a related quantitative discipline, with an interest in solving real-world biological and biomedical challenges. Expertise in computational modelling approaches, including network-based, mechanistic, and/or AI/ML frameworks for analysing complex biological systems. Experience identifying key signalling network mechanisms, predictive biomarkers, and biological design principles from large-scale datasets. Proven ability to develop and implement robust computational pipelines for integrative analysis of omics and mass spectrometry data, particularly interactomics and post-translational modification mapping. Demonstrated success translating complex clinical and biological questions into practical computational biology solutions. Strong collaborative track record working across dry-lab and wet-lab environments, partnering with experimental biologists and clinicians to generate biologically meaningful insights.
