Located in Camperdown 5 year FIXED-TERM position with an attractive remuneration package About the opportunity The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) at the University of Sydney has commenced an international search for the key leadership role of Deputy Dean. The new Deputy Dean will be joining at a key time, as the University enters the second phase of its ten-year strategic cycle (Sydney in 2032) and the Faculty progresses its own strategic plan. The new Deputy Dean will work alongside the Dean, Professor Lisa Adkins, as FASS looks to consolidate its position as a world-leading centre for education and research across the humanities, arts, and social science disciplines. The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Sydney is the oldest and one of the most comprehensive of its kind in Australia. The Faculty remains proud of its past while focused on the future. The Faculty's distinctiveness lies in the depth and breadth of its disciplines, with its many research and teaching strengths earning it a deserved reputation for excellence nationally and internationally. The Faculty's research is driven by the pursuit of multidisciplinary knowledge that benefits Australia and the wider world. In 2025 we welcomed two new flagship centres, the Centre for AI, Trust and Governance, which advances responsible AI development through multidisciplinary research, fosters public trust, and informs policy decisions in complex regulatory environments; and the Contemporary Inequalities Centre, which brings together multidisciplinary expertise to pursue collaborative, problem-driven research, aiming to respond to emerging social and economic challenges to build the evidence base needed to shape new policy responses. Our other flagship research centres include the Vere Gordon Childe Centre, and the Sydney Centre for Healthy Societies. Other research centres, institutes, and groups in the Faculty include the Sydney Institute for Community Languages Education, the CREATE Centre, and the Sydney Social Sciences and Humanities Advanced Research Centre (SSSHARC). For our students, and in collaboration with our partners, the Faculty offers internships and work placements, overseas exchange and interdisciplinary collaboration around complex, real-world problems. As we mature our connections with industry, community and government, the Faculty is seeking to establish anchoring partnerships operating across its research and education portfolios. About you (skills, capabilities and experience) The Deputy Dean is a key member of the FASS leadership team, providing academic leadership, and contributing to strategy, operations, financial management, people management and internal and external stakeholder engagement, as well as deputising for the Dean (as required). A key responsibility of this role is strategically guiding and advising Disciplines and Schools to ensure effective collaboration and partnership across the University and to accelerate and enhance priority initiatives. The position also provides strategic input around the development of an equitable, diverse, and future-focused academic workforce. Priorities going forward are the implementation of key initiatives as part of the second phase of our Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences 2032 strategy; the development of leadership capabilities in FASS; enhancing our external engagement activities and connections with industry, community and government, and ensuring the safety, health, and well-being of all staff and students. The appointee will hold PhD qualifications in a relevant FASS discipline with demonstrated research excellence and scholarship. They will bring a deep commitment to innovation, excellence in research and education, equity, diversity, inclusion, sustainability, and collaboration. They will have had significant experience leading academic units, including financial and operational management and strategic planning and delivery. They will have a mature understanding of workforce planning and management, research, education, and engagement in academic environments. They will also demonstrate a deep understanding of key strategic issues in the higher education and experience in the development and delivery of initiatives and projects therein. The successful candidate will also be offered a professorial appointment in an appropriate discipline in the Faculty and will retain that position at the conclusion of their Deputy Deanship. About you  ​​This role sits within King’s Digital, an innovative and collaborative team driving the development of online education at King’s College London. In partnership with academics, professional services, and external collaborators, King’s Digital designs, develops, and delivers a diverse range of educational programmes aligned with the university’s Education Strategy.  ​Although based within King’s Digital, the role works in close collaboration with the Digital Education directorate in IT. This directorate plays a key role in advancing the university’s digital education ambitions, with a focus on core systems, innovation, digital skills, and agile delivery.  ​Through this partnership, you’ll contribute directly to the enhancement of the platforms and environments that support online and blended learning across King’s College London. At the same time, you’ll benefit from being part of a creative and experienced team of developers within King’s Digital, working to make Moodle more usable and functional for staff and students. ​The role is primarily based at King’s Waterloo campus (James Clerk Maxwell Building), with flexibility to work remotely as part of King’s hybrid working model.  About the role  This role sits within the Web Development team in King’s Digital and works in close collaboration with the Digital Education directorate to enhance the platforms and environments that shape the learning experience at King’s College London. The role is focused on improving the virtual learning environment that supports our online and blended courses, ensuring it meets the evolving needs of students and educators alike.  Working in collaboration with other team members, you will work on developing our learning environment according to UX hand-off and accessibility requirements. You will also write clear, concise documentation to support its use and provide technical and process support to those using our functionality, including the wider university community. With both excellent technical and communication skills, you will support our team to build the best possible e-learning product for our students.  Key Responsibilities: Develop, customise, and maintain King’s Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) and other Digital Education tools, following the briefs provided by our UX team  Develop clever and efficient solutions to technological problems, including exploring ideas for innovative project solutions leveraging tech effectively (eg APIs and querying, effective selection and use of frameworks)  Develop custom Moodle child themes using SCSS pipeline, and JavaScript modules. Ensure the quality of our product and code through proactive thinking and vigorous testing, as well as iterative improvement  Optimise Moodle performance, accessibility, and front-end behaviours. Engage with open-source development projects and represent King’s College London, as well as King’s Digital and Digital Education in the communities around them Conduct regular testing and optimisation to ensure platform stability, scalability and security. Write clear, maintainable documentation and provide technical support to educators and content editors. About you To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience: Essential criteria Proven experience in Moodle development including custom themes, plugins, APIs configuration and translating UX/UI designs into Moodle compatible front-end components Strong front end development skills including HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, Frontend frameworks (i.e. Bootstrap), and preprocessors (i.e. SASS) Strong PHP development skills and familiarity with object-oriented programming principles and Moodle’s backend structure. Comfortable working with Database Structure (e.g. MySQL) Experience using distributed version control systems such as GIT Understanding of accessibility, usability, and responsive design standards and testing Excellent communication and collaboration skills including the ability to write clear documentation for non-technical stakeholders, work effectively in Agile teams (ADO, Jira), and contribute constructively to group outcomes. Demonstrate commitment to inclusive practice, strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail and an interest in online and technology enhanced education. Desirable criteria Experience integrating Moodle with external systems (e.g. REST APIs, LTI, SSO). Familiarity with Moodle Dev Tools, automated testing, or CI/CD pipelines. Experience contributing to open-source projects or Moodle community plugins. Knowledge of UX principles and collaboration with designer. We do this by bringing together world-leading experts in trials (design, methods, and conduct), biostatistics, patient-reported outcomes, health economics, translational research, research synthesis, and health technology assessment. Collaborative partnerships help us to ensure trial results best inform clinical practice. The Institute for Musculoskeletal Health is part of the University of Sydney's Faculty of Medicine and Health (FMH). Our researchers work collaboratively with researchers within the FMH and across the University to advance the quality and effectiveness of research. The Clinical Trial Assistant works as part of the clinical trials research team in a support role to perform general administrative duties for the COMFORT and SAGE trials - trials designed to support general practitioners optimise the management of people with low back and neck pain. The Clinical Trial Assistant tasks include: site visits and site monitoring, patient-participant follow-up, preparing documents, maintaining records, data entry, updating and collating materials, responding to queries and exploring and sourcing solutions for the trial team and collaborative groups. This role will involve travel between associated sites, University precincts and other locations as required. Hybrid working arrangements will be discussed with your manager if you are successful in this position. The Role and the Department The Arts and Humanities Faculty Global Opportunities Coordinator role is an excellent opportunity to work as part of a cross-departmental team providing support to the staff and students of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. Our Professional Services teams place a strong emphasis on professional development and team members are encouraged and supported to identify and take forward process improvements, specific projects and other initiatives appropriate to their grade. In particular this role, with close supervision from the Deputy Faculty Manager, and via collaboration with the International Office's Global Opportunities team, involves ensuring the best possible experience for students preparing for and engaged on travel abroad as a constituent part of one of the Faculty's degree programmes, or participating on a Durham degree programme as an exchange student. In collaboration with academic colleagues, coordinating the monitoring and recording of placement activity to ensure that students can travel abroad safely and in accordance with relevant policy and legislation. Establishing and maintaining excellent relationships with key University stakeholders responsible for year abroad provision, as well as external stakeholders in partner institutions.
