Faculty

Academic Infrastructure

Building on its more than 500-year-long tradition, it offers a broad spectrum that covers all areas of knowledge within its 18 Faculties, ranging from the humanities, law, economics and social sciences, to medicine and the natural sciences. The Faculty for the Study of Culture, Department of Ancient and Modern Cultures, invites applications for a Full Professorship (W3) of Pre- and Protohistoric Archaeology (Chair) commencing as soon as possible. The professorship will be based at the Institute for Pre- and Protohistoric Archaeology and the Archaeology of the Roman Provinces. The future holder of the position is expected to represent the subject in its full breadth from a clearly articulated perspective grounded in cultural analysis. The candidate is expected to possess a broad portfolio of topics and methods in research and teaching. A research focus in the Pre-Christian periods (especially Younger Neolithic/Copper Age; Bronze Age; Iron Ages) is desirable. The future holder of the position is further expected to have experience in conducting field research projects, be prepared to carry out such projects at LMU Munich, and further develop the chair's focus on human-environment relations (Vegetation History Working Group). Furthermore, a broad cultural-scientific perspective is expected, as well as a basic understanding of the scientific methods of affiliated disciplines in the Natural Sciences. Next to discipline-specific research, recognizable interdisciplinary research approaches are desirable. Prerequisites for this position are a university degree in Pre- and Protohistoric Archaeology, a doctoral degree or a comparable specific qualification, teaching skills at university level, excellent academic achievements and a productive and promising research program. Experience and success in acquiring third-party funding are expected, as is a willingness to develop both individual research and collaborative projects, and to cooperate with institutions across the Bavarian, national, and international scientific community of archaeological research. Furthermore, the candidate’s tasks include teaching lectures and courses and conducting examinations in the existing bachelor’s and master’s degree programs as well as in doctoral degree programs.
