Linköping University was established in 1975 and since then has gone on to become one of the larger universities in Sweden. Originally the government established a branch of the University of Stockholm in the town of Linköping to provide education in the fields of technology and medicine. As other schools and faculties were added over the years Linköping University was born.

Linköping University now consists of four campuses spread over three cities. It has an innovative structure consisting of four very broad faculties: Medicine and Health Sciences, Arts and Sciences, Educational Sciences and the Institute of Technology. There are also 14 departments, each combining skills and knowledge from different faculties to facilitate interdisciplinary research and academic work.

There are also several cutting edge research institutes at Linköping which receive government funding and specialise in such fields as organic bioelectronics, hearing and deafness, gender excellence and disaster medicine.

The university prides itself on its work in the areas of medicine, teacher training, business and economics and offers international students a great opportunity to study in a stimulating interdisciplinary environment. The international perspective of Linköping University means it ranks highly for both research and education at the global level with courses in English from undergraduate through to the PhD stage. The university exchange program sees around one thousand foreign students attending classes at Linköping every year, creating a stimulating, cosmopolitan campus life. Linköping University also has over 20 international programs available and teaches students from all around the world.

The role The Institute for Communication Systems (ICS), home of the 6G Innovation Centre (6GIC), is looking to recruit a full-time Research Fellow to work on Generative and Token-based Semantic Communication Technologies for Future Wireless Networks (this is a fixed term contract upto Sept 2027). For this opening, the successful candidate will be required to have research experience in wireless communication systems as well as familiarity with design and training of state-of-the-art large generative AI models, e.g. Diffusion Models, Multimodal Large Language Models, etc. The area of specialization for this post is Generative Semantic and Token Communication Technologies for Future Wireless Networks. ICS is the largest academic research institute in Europe specialising in all aspects of ICT (Information and Communication Technologies). It is home to over 200 researchers with expertise in all communication and broadcasting systems and has developed the best-in-class large scale testbeds for research and innovation and enjoys the state-of-the-art lab and computing facilities. Established in 2012, 5GIC is the world’s first dedicated centre in researching end-to-end aspects of 5G and works closely with national and international leading academic institutes and key industrial partners. In November 2020, 6GIC was officially launched with parallel research undertaken in both 5G+ and 6G for 2030+. About you Applicants should have a good honors PhD degree in wireless communications or AI and computer vision fields and a strong track record of publications. Preference will be given to those with prior publications either in top-tier AI and Computer Vision venues (e.g., NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, CVPR, etc.), or prestigious IEEE journals (e.g. IEEE JSAC, ComST, etc.). Applicants are expected to have good problem solving and analytical skills, to be proactive, to engage with other researchers and to be self-motivated. The successful candidate will, in collaboration with other researchers, specify, design and implement the systems under investigation. About the project SUSTECH investigates how technological trajectories in chemistry and pharmaceuticals evolve, with a particular focus on the selection of hazardous versus sustainable innovations. The project combines large-scale data on chemical compounds and patents with computational chemistry and machine learning to generate novel insights into innovation processes and policy design. The Theory Testing Lab at the University of Vienna focuses on empirical analyses of pharmaceutical innovation, developing and leveraging large-scale datasets (e.g., patents, clinical trials, molecular data) to study how innovation trajectories emerge and are shaped. The position offers the opportunity to contribute to internationally visible, frontier research. You will have the chance to help build and shape a high-impact interdisciplinary research group while working on your own research. The group is led by Prof. Stefan Wagner, who publishes in leading international journals and serves as Associate Editor at Management Science.
