About Lincoln University (New Zealand)

Basic information and contact details for Lincoln University (New Zealand)

institution

Lincoln University is one of the leading higher education institutions in New Zealand, specialising in land use and management. Its Māori name is Te Whare Wānaka o Aoraki.

The university started out in 1878 as the School of Agriculture linked to Canterbury College. As agriculture became the crucial foundation for New Zealand’s international trade, the school grew into a college, and in 1990 became an independent institution.

Its purpose is to facilitate excellent research and education to grow the knowledge of its students and help shape a world that benefits from a greater understanding of the relationships between land, food, and ecosystems.

As such, it has a particular focus on teaching and research that addresses the bioeconomy, sustainability and climate change. For example, Bioprotection Aotearoa, a National Centre of Research Excellence (CoRE), is hosted by Lincoln University.

The Faculty of Agribusiness and Commerce teaches students how to run successful and sustainable businesses in land-based sectors.

The Faculty of Agriculture and Life Sciences focuses on sustainable food production and the management of our natural and agricultural landscapes, and the species within them.

The Faculty of Environment, Society and Design teaches how humans interact with the land, water and people.

Academic Preparation and Pathways (AP&P) delivers pathway programmes in both English-language and academic preparation, along with short-course programmes for international partners, including study abroad.

Lincoln University owns several farms around New Zealand crucial to its practical scientific research, immersive teaching, and engagement with the land-based sectors
