About Kobe University

Basic information and contact details for Kobe University

Formally established in 1949, Kobe University is a national university based in the Hyōgo region of Japan. Its roots date back further, to 1902, when it was originally known as Kobe Higher Commercial School.

Today, it is one of the largest national universities in the country serving approximately 16,000 students, including around 1,500 from overseas. The majority are undergraduates with about 4,500 studying at graduate level.

Most international students come from Asia, followed by Europe and then Africa, with a handful from Latin America, North America and Oceania.

Kobe comprises 14 graduate schools and 11 undergraduate faculties spread across four sites. Its primary one, the Rokkodai campus, houses nine of its 11 faculties, with other campuses in Kusunoki, Myodani and Fukae.

A number of scholarships are available for students wishing to study at Kobe. These include the Japanese Government Scholarship System, JASSO/Honours Scholarship, Hyogo Prefecture Private Foreign Student Scholarship, and the Kobe/Sugawara Scholarship.

As part of its focus on providing students with a global outlook, there are a number of initiatives offered at the university. The International Five-year Economics Education at Kobe (IFEEK) gives students a chance to graduate with a master’s in five years; the Kobe International Business and Research Programme (KIBER) gives business administration students a chance to study abroad for a year; and the Kobe University Programme for European

Studies (KUPES) is a double-degree programme training experts in the European Union.

Through the Institute of Promoting International Exchange Programmes, the university runs the Centre for EU Studies, Centre for Asian Studies, and the Office of the Americas.

One of its major research initiatives lies in the Graduate School of Science, Technology and Innovation, which was the first multidisciplinary independent graduate school in Japan.

Located at the base of Mount Rokkō, the university provides panoramic views of the city and its coastal shoreline.

Alumni of Kobe include former prime ministers of Japan, government ministers, writers and successful international businessmen and women.

Description The Division of Engineering, New York University Abu Dhabi, seeks to recruit Research Scientist to work on advanced sustainable functionalized membranes for desalination and water treatment, under the supervision of Professor Nidal Hilal, Director of the Water Research Center and Global Professor of Engineering. The successful applicant will drive an exciting project on developing functionalized membrane materials to tailor sustainable antifouling hybrid ultrafiltration membranes and antibacterial nanofiltration or reverse osmosis membranes for desalination and water purification. The candidate will explore advanced membrane fabrication techniques and characterization tools (SEM, AFM, Raman, TEM, DSC, XRD, FTIR, TGA, BET, etc.) to correlate fabrication-structure-property-performance of novel nanomaterials with sustainable membranes for desalination and water purification via separation processes. The candidate will work in a multidisciplinary environment consisting of PhD-level scientists and engineers, graduate students, and undergraduate students. The successful applicant will manage the project and work closely with postdoctoral researchers, establish deep technical knowledge, and develop transferable skills. He/she will actively be involved in developing novel concepts and writing research proposals. He/she will work on solving complex problems with efficiency and creativity. He/she will be involved in writing progress reports, authoring peer-reviewed publications, drafting patents, and presenting results at national and international conferences. The successful candidate will have to demonstrate his expertise in assessing antibacterial and antibiofouling properties of nanomaterials, membrane fabrications, sewage water treatment, life cycle assessment, and separation processes. He/she will be detail-oriented and well-organized and will possess excellent verbal and written communication skills. The successful candidate should be able to work independently and as part of a team. Applicants must have a PhD in materials science and engineering, environmental chemistry, chemical engineering, or a related field, along with at least 6 years of relevant post-PhD research experience along with extensive research and publication in well-known journals and conference papers or similar research accomplishments. Analytical characterization skills and excellent experimental expertise relevant to assessing the antibacterial and antibiofouling properties of diversified sustainable membranes are required. Candidates with a history of peer-reviewed publications in a related research area and prior expertise in materials science, environmental chemistry, and water treatment will be preferred. This position will begin in September 2026 as a two-year contract, renewable depending on performance. As a University of Applied Learning, SIT works closely with industry in our research pursuits. Our research staff will have the opportunity to be equipped with applied research skill sets that are relevant to industry demands while working on research projects in SIT. The primary responsibility of this role is to deliver on an industry innovation research project where you will be part of the research team to lead the storm surge modelling in the Singapore Sea. As a specialist in wave modelling software, the successful candidate will work on cutting-edge projects related to coastal and ocean wave modelling using Delt3D software. The role of the researcher is to perform physics-based modeling to build a numerical model that can predict storm surges in Singapore coastlines based on different weather conditions. The researcher will also work with team members within the consortium in generating necessary data required for developing a machine learning model for storm surge prediction. Key Responsibilities Participate in and manage the research project with Principal Investigator (PI), Co-PI and the research team members to ensure all project deliverables are met. Undertake these responsibilities in the project: Delft3D and SWAN Modelling: Utilize Delft3D and SWAN software to develop and validate numerical models for wave propagation, storm surge modelling, and coastal dynamics. Building up of a database of sea level anomaly with extreme weather conditions: Utilize the developed numerical model to build a database of sea level anomaly with different weather conditions, which can be used to develop a data-driven model for storm surge prediction. Data Analysis: Process and analyze climate, ocean wave and coastal data to improve model accuracy. Research: Conduct research to enhance wave modelling techniques and contribute to the advancement of coastal engineering and oceanography. Impact Assessment: Evaluating the potential impacts of storm surges on coastal regions, including flood risk assessments and vulnerability analyses. Collaboration: Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, including hydrodynamic researchers, coastal engineers, and oceanographers. Reporting: Prepare research findings for publication in scientific journals and present results at conferences. Carry out Risk Assessment, and ensure compliance with Work, Safety and Health Regulations. Coordinate procurement and liaison with vendors/suppliers. Work independently, as well as within a team, to ensure proper operation and maintenance of equipment. Assists in co-supervision of Final Year Projects (FYP) or capstone projects students together with the project PI. The employee is to communicate with any relevant internal or external stakeholders to ensure project deliverables are met. Any adhoc duties assigned. Requirements PhD or Master degree in a related field with a focus on coastal engineering, oceanography, or hydrodynamics. Proficiency in wave modeling software, particularly Delft3D and SWAN. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Research experience in coastal and ocean waves is preferred. Description The Center for Sand Hazards and Opportunities in Resilience, Energy, and Sustainability (SHORES) and the Division of Engineering, New York University Abu Dhabi, seek to recruit a Post-doctoral Associate to work on a fascinating project focused on the development machine-learning powered digital twin system for the structural performance of civil engineering structures. The project is a collaboration between multiple research groups led primarily by Professor Tarek Abdoun and Professor Mostafa Mobasher. It involves a diverse range of activities including: structural and geotechnical modeling, machine-learning model development, structural sensing and health monitoring, conducting physical experiments, and validation of computational models. Job Purpose:  The Research Engineer will support applied research and innovation in sustainability focusing on, but not limited to, the Built Environment sector, working with internal teams and industry partners to develop practical solutions. Key Responsibilities: Applied Research & Development Perform sustainability assessment and analysis for organizational green transition.
