Kharkiv National Medical University is a state medical university in Kharkiv, Ukraine and one of the country’s oldest higher education institutions in the field of medicine. Its origins date back to 1805, when medical training first began as part of the medical faculty of the Imperial Kharkiv University.
The university has teaching facilities, clinical centres and affiliated hospitals across the city. It serves around 10,000 students, including a substantial international student body drawn from Asia, Africa, Europe and Latin America.
Kharkiv National Medical University has developed through several institutional stages, including Kharkiv Medical Institute and Kharkiv State Medical University, before receiving national university status in 2007.
It offers training programmes in general medicine, dentistry, nursing, postgraduate clinical education and a wide range of specialist medical fields.
The university is supported by a large academic staff and maintains an extensive network of clinical partnerships with hospitals and research institutions. Its teaching model combines academic study with practical clinical training across affiliated medical facilities, ensuring students gain direct experience in real healthcare environments alongside structured theoretical education.
Kharkiv National Medical University is recognised by Ukraine’s Ministry of Education and Science and has long standing international engagement, having trained medical professionals from more than 80 countries. It also maintains cooperation agreements with universities and medical institutions across Europe and Asia, contributing to its global academic profile.
Research activity at the university spans key medical fields including cardiovascular disease, surgery, reproductive health, oncology and medical genetics. It produces a significant volume of scientific publications each year and contributes to medical innovation through research projects, clinical studies and patent development within Ukraine’s healthcare education system.
The university also houses a museum of medical history, established in 1968, which preserves and documents from more than two centuries of medical education and scientific progress in Kharkiv.
