Karlsruhe Institute of Technology was only officially established in 2009, following the merger of the University of Karlsruhe and the Karlsruhe Research Center.

Its predecessor’s roots, however, stretch back much further. The University of Karlsruhe was established in 1825, while the KRC was founded as a nuclear research facility, previously called Kernforschungszentrum Karlsruhe, in 1956.

KIT has several campuses in Karlsruhe, the second biggest city in the sate of Baden-Württemberg. The north campus north is located in the town’s administrative district, while its south campus is in the heart of the city centre. 

Since 1902, the university has also been referred to as the Fridericiana, an homage to Grand Duke Friedrich I of Baden, who officially elevated the University of Karlsruhe to Hochschule status – making it a fully-fledged university in the late 19th century.

Many of the most significant inventions and innovations started life at KIT. Former students include Karl Friedrich Benz, the automobile engineer who designed the “Benz Patent Motorcar”, widely considered the first practical car; and Karl Ferdinand Braun, who developed the cathode ray tube commonly used in televisions.

The Institute can also lay claim to six Nobel laureates, including the 1909 winner for physics, Ferdinand Braun; Fritz Haber , who won the chemistry prize in 1918; and, most recently, Herman Staudinger who won for chemistry in 1953.

Karlsruhe Institute of Technology is a member of the TU9 German Institutes of Technology, which represents the largest and most prestigious engineering and technology specialist universities in the country. It employees about 9,300 people, and hosts some 25,000 students.

About us The Faculty of Natural, Mathematical & Engineering Sciences (NMES) is a vibrant faculty based in the heart of London with a long tradition of world-leading research and teaching in physics, mathematics, chemistry, informatics and engineering.  This role presents an exciting opportunity to run and develop the Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) service in the Chemistry department providing expert guidance and advice to end users from method development to data collection and interpretation. Reporting to the Senior Technical Manager (Operations) at the Guys Campus. About the role The role-holder will have extensive technical expertise in NMR and comprehensive knowledge of small molecule solution NMR. They will support research activities across several different user groups, such as PhD students, researchers, external and industrial users, to deliver an exceptional service. They will manage the service, troubleshoot to minimise downtime and will be responsible for the compliance with Health & Safety and other relevant regulations governing the service. The successful candidate will be an active member of King’s Technical Network, engaging in Faculty and College initiatives to strengthen and share best practice, with an ongoing commitment to professional development. They will facilitate an inclusive culture and ethos in line with King’s Equality, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) strategy, proactively liaising with both internal and external stakeholders at all levels. About the Role We are seeking five Researchers to join an exciting collaborative project in partnership with Toyota Manufacturing UK (TMUK), a leading global industry partner. This role combines applied research with practical development, focusing on innovative solutions that address real-world challenges. This project will support the development of a new, lightweight battery electric vehicle (BEV) at TMUK’s Burnaston site. The vehicle will meet the rising demand for eco-friendly micro-mobility, with features including a solar roof, advanced connectivity, and sustainable materials, ensuring end of recovery and recycling. It supports the UK's move to zero-emission transport, boosts the supply chain, and secures jobs at TMUK. By developing a ready-to-produce design, the project opens new market opportunities and positions the UK as a leader in sustainable urban mobility and advanced automotive manufacturing. The Advanced Propulsion Centre UK (APC) has funded this £30.3 million project through the UK Government’s DRIVE35 Collaborate programme and aims to meet the evolving needs of urban populations while accelerating the shift to zero tailpipe emission transport by validating a novel, lightweight BEV in the L6e category. The University of Derby will play a critical role in the project, leading on real-world testing and analysis, and leveraging its expertise in micromobility user behaviour and solar energy viability. Together, the consortium partners are studying how to shape a smarter and more sustainable future for urban mobility across Europe. Acting as a ‘living lab,’ the University will evaluate how the BEV fits evolving patterns of sustainable urban mobility and assess its potential to transform city transport. As micromobility becomes central to the future of urban transport, this study marks a vital step towards understanding and meeting the evolving mobility needs of city populations while accelerating the shift towards reduced congestion emissions and enhanced urban accessibility. The research aligns with the University of Derby’s flagship Derby Urban Sustainable Transport Transition (DUST) project, focused on enhancing the city’s green spaces and promoting low-carbon mobility. By applying innovations in data-centric engineering and market demand opportunities, along with user engagement and experience, we will explore how novel technologies will be adopted and accepted such that micromobility reaches the most appropriate users and locations, maximising accessibility and effectiveness. The Department is one of the UK’s largest academic groupings of clinical and health psychologists, with developing strength in broader area of applied and basis psychological science.
