Karakalpak State University was founded in 1976. The university offers 49 undergraduate and 20 master specialisms for students to choose from. There are 15 faculties including economics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, history, physical culture, geography and natural resources. There are also the faculties of foreign languages, construction, architecture, industry and technology, philology and journalism, and law. The university offers a range of extra-curricular opportunities from sports to literacy and academia. The dance group, Khurliman, has been running for over 40 years, offering students the opportunity to participate in international festivals across the country. The university’s drama school has also won several awards. Students can also become involved with the university’s newspaper and radio, gaining skills in journalism and communication. Karakalpak State has partnerships with 55 universities across 17 countries around the world, from Europe to China, Kazakhstan and the UK. Through these partnerships, the university offers study abroad Erasmus+ programmes.

About the area The International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR) is a joint venture between Curtin University and The University of Western Australia (UWA), established in 2009 and funded through 2030 with $65 million from the WA State Government. ICRAR is a leading institution in radio astronomy and a key Australian contributor to the global SKA project. The Astrophotonics Group within ICRAR develops advanced photonic systems for radio and optical astronomy, with a focus on long-distance transfer of stabilised frequency and timing signals via optical fibre and free-space laser links. About the opportunity Contribute to small research team conducting research on free-space optical communication, specifically optimised for operations within maritime environments. Work within a UWA small team and contribute to collaborations with project partner organisations including industry, government, and defence. Conduct technical work including laboratory experiments and hardware development, software and algorithm development, optical communications development, and assist with maritime and airborne field trials. Transformational Coaching for Employment: Identity Formation Among Indian Youth Join an exciting Leverhulme Trust–funded research project at the University of Southampton exploring how coaching for elite employment shapes the identities, aspirations, and social mobility of young people in India. Situated within the sociology of education, this innovative project focuses on coaching for the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) examinations—one of the most competitive routes into prestigious public sector careers in India. Drawing on a novel conceptual framework of ‘coached habitus’, the research examines how non-formal education influences youth transitions, identity formation, and the education–employment nexus in contexts of inequality. Adopting a multi-method qualitative design, the study combines ethnographic and visual methods, biographical interviews, and policy analysis. The project aims to generate internationally significant research outputs alongside meaningful policy and public engagement. About the role The Research Fellow will play a central role in delivering this ambitious project. You will take a leading role in qualitative fieldwork and data collection in Delhi, including ethnographic observations, interviews, and visual documentation, and contribute across all stages of research, from design to dissemination. You will work closely with Dr Achala Gupta and will be supported to develop an internationally competitive research profile. The role offers opportunities to co-author publications, lead elements of project outputs, present at major international conferences, and engage with policy stakeholders.
