Further information on the UH tenure track system on the webpage. JOB DESCRIPTION Applicants should demonstrate a capacity to contribute to anthropological scholarship at the highest level. Social and Cultural Anthropology at UH has a strong research environment for political economy, ethics and morality, cognitive anthropology, environment and sustainability, location and borders, and linguistic anthropology. Thematic specialisation for this position is open, but we are particularly interested in candidates specialising in political and environmental questions. Anthropology at UH is known for its diverse regional expertise and emphasis on ethnographic research. We are looking for candidates with strong regional expertise grounded in extensive ethnographic research. All regional specializations are welcome, consideration will be given to how a candidate’s expertise complements and enriches the regional profile of the current faculty, which can be found here. The successful candidate will conduct internationally recognised research and contribute to teaching at all levels in the relevant degree programmes. The doctoral degree requirement must be met by the end of the application deadline. An appointee to the position of assistant/associate professor in the tenure track system shall hold a doctoral degree and have the ability to conduct independent scholarly work as well as the teaching skills required for the position. In addition, the appointee shall have the capacity and potential to pursue an academic career at a high level, as demonstrated by publications and other means. In assessing the applicants’ qualifications, attention shall be paid to scientific publications and research, teaching experience and qualifications, international experience and collaborations, and success in the acquisition of external research funding. An appointee to the position of professor shall hold a doctoral degree and have high-level academic qualifications; experience in leading scientific research; the ability to provide research-based teaching and supervise dissertations and theses; as well as evidence of international cooperation in the research field they represent. The appointee shall also have academic leadership skills. When considering the applicant’s qualifications, attention shall be given to scientific publications and other research results of scientific value, teaching experience and pedagogical training, the ability to produce teaching material, other teaching merits and, if necessary, a demonstration of teaching skills as well as the applicant’s participation in doctoral education. Account shall also be taken of the applicants’ activity in the international scientific community, success in obtaining external research funding, international research experience and international elected positions as well as leadership and interaction skills. To successfully attend to the duties of the position, the appointee must have good English skills. If the appointee is not proficient in Finnish or Swedish, the appointee is expected to acquire moderate proficiency within a reasonable time after the appointment. Programme Overview The Overseas Outstanding Young Scientists Fund Programme aims to attract and encourage outstanding young scholars (including non-ethnic Chinese foreign talents) who have achieved notable accomplishments in natural sciences, engineering, and technology to return to or come to China. They will independently select research directions to conduct innovative studies, thereby accelerating the growth of young scientific and technological talents. This initiative seeks to cultivate a cohort of outstanding academic leaders poised to advance to the forefront of global science and technology, contributing to the nation's endeavours to become a leading scientific and technological power. II. Application Requirements The final requirements shall be subject to the 2026 National Natural Science Foundation of China Outstanding Young Scientist Fund Programme (Overseas) Application Guidelines. 1. Applicants for the Outstanding Young Scientists Fund Programme (Overseas) must meet the following criteria: (1) Comply with the laws and regulations of the People's Republic of China, demonstrate sound scientific ethics, and conscientiously embody the spirit of scientists in the new era; (2) Have been born on or after 1 January 1986; (3) Hold a doctoral degree; (4) Their research focus should primarily lie within natural sciences, engineering technology, or related fields; (5) Between obtaining their doctoral degree and 15 April 2026, applicants should generally have held a formal teaching or research position at an overseas university, research institution, or corporate R&D centre, with a continuous work history of at least 36 months. For those who obtained their doctoral degree overseas and have demonstrated particularly outstanding achievements, the work experience requirement may be appropriately relaxed (this does not apply to those who obtained their overseas doctoral degree through joint Sino-foreign training programmes). For applicants holding concurrently remunerated positions within China during their overseas employment period, the duration of such domestic employment shall not be counted towards the overseas work requirement; (6) Have achieved research or technical accomplishments recognised by peers, demonstrating potential to become an academic leader or outstanding talent in the field; (7) Applicants must not yet have taken up full-time employment in China, or must commence such employment after 1 January 2025. Upon receiving funding notification, they must resign from their overseas position and undertake full-time employment in China for a minimum of three years. 2. Limitation Requirements: Compliance with national science and technology talent programme coordination requirements is mandatory. Applicants may undertake only one programme at the same level and may not apply for programmes at a lower level. III. Support Policies 1.
