About the Job The Residential Life General Assistant supports the effective day to day management of the University of East London’s Halls of Residence. This role helps ensure our accommodation is safe and welcoming by assisting with estate operations, health and safety compliance, and customer service delivery. You will be involved in a wide range of responsibilities, from providing portering services, troubleshooting white-good faults, facilitating access and room set-ups, maintaining high standards of health and safety through inspections and delivering excellent customer service. Working as part of a customer-focused team, you will play an important role in enhancing the student and guest experience, supporting compliance with standards such as the UUK Code of Practice, and ensuring our residences remain a positive and vibrant place to live and learn. This is a campus-based role. Experience of maintaining inventory and stock. Knowledge of health and safety practices and a commitment to compliance. Knowledge of operating white goods. The Role and the Department Computing and Information Services (CIS) is the central IT support service for Durham University. CIS work with departments across the university to provide academic, teaching and administrative services that underpin the day-to-day activities of the whole organisation. CIS is a friendly, but demanding department, where much is expected and can be achieved by competent, self-motivated individuals who demonstrate team work ability. The department works in a hybrid (remote and on-site) capacity with on-site attendance being required as and when the demands of the business require. This role is within the Infrastructure section; which has responsibility for Data Storage, Servers, Cloud, Virtualisation, Operating Systems, Networking, End User Compute and Physical Datacentres within CIS. The successful candidate will be responsible for design, configuration and support of new solutions and existing services across these technical areas. To be successful in this role you should have experience of designing, implementing and supporting enterprise level IT services and solutions and be able to demonstrate excellent communication and organisational skills. You should have demonstrable evidence of leading technical projects at an enterprise scale. The candidate is expected to engage in teaching Japanese language courses as well as organizing the Department’s student activities. The initial appointment is up to 10 months with a possibility of a second contract (10-month contract) upon mutual agreement. Qualifications Applicants should have a Master’s degree in the field of Japanese Linguistics, Japanese Education, Japanese Literature, or Japanese Culture from an accredited program and some experience and/or qualifications in teaching Japanese language to non-native students. The successful candidates also need to possess excellent organizational abilities, strong communication skills, and effective leadership qualities. Excellent command of Japanese language is expected. Academic research and publication are not required for this position. The selected candidate is expected to assume duty in August 2026.
