About Ilia State University

Ilia State University, located in Tbilisi, Georgia, is one of the leading higher education institutions in South Caucasus region focusing on scientific advancement and transferring top notch knowledge to facilitate societal development.

Our mission revolves around three main principles: Unity of Teaching and Research, Unity of Liberal Education and Professional Training, and Unity of Universal and Local.

Established in 2006 as a merger of six different institutions, each having a long history and a diverse institutional profile, Ilia State University justly occupies the top position among research universities in South Caucasus (according to SCimago Institutions Rankings).

Its four schools (School of Arts and Sciences, School of Natural Sciences and Engineering, School of Business, School of Law) offer distinctive training in their respective directions and along with 30 large and small scale research institutes, centers and stations; create in-depth research opportunities in social sciences, humanities, business, law, life sciences, earth sciences, and hard sciences.

ISU has secured unique position in Georgia’s educational system for its contribution to science popularization, boosting entrepreneurial ecosystem of the country and actively carrying out social responsibility projects.

ISU has become one of the most desirable universities to study and work for in the country. It has the highest competition rate for PhD programs in the nation and extensive international ties. ISU welcomes more than 16,000 students, has over 1,100 highly qualified academic and research staff, and several research infrastructures in various Georgian regions.

We welcome 4000 freshmen every year at 23 Undergraduate (Bachelor) and 49 Graduate Programs (Master and Doctoral level). We offer:

  • Student-centered teaching- Vibrant relations between professors and students contribute to lively academic collaboration and debates. Students are encouraged and supported by faculty to find their individual research interests during their studies.
  • Practice and research based curriculum- ISU collaborates with governmental bodies and international organizations, as well as public and private entities to create opportunities for students to integrate theoretical knowledge into the workplace.
  • Exchange and double degree opportunities- Since 2012, ISU offers exchange programs to its students and staff in numerous international higher education institutions. Furthermore, ISU offers exclusive opportunities to its students by offering double degree diploma with Austrian and US universities.
  • Internationalization at home – Our students come from 15 different countries, we regularly host renowned international guest speakers on numerous international events.

  • Excellent campus facilities - New building for engineering programs, built in cooperation with San Diego State University Georgia will serve first students in January 2019. It will host modern study rooms, co-working spaces and most importantly, seven new laboratories equipped with latest technologies.

ISU unites around 30 Research Institutes and Centers, covering wide range of fundamental and applied sciences. ISU cooperates with over 500 partner HEIs and organizations in all corners of the world in different capacities: we have around 100 Partnership Agreements, 60 ongoing Exchange Programs within Erasmus +, more than 70 international grants, including EU funded projects with ISU’s coordination.
