About you A completed doctorate in the field of Education or a closely related field, with a demonstrated record of teaching in higher education, including initial teacher education and/or mentoring of pre-service teachers in school settings. Demonstrated ability to lead professional experience and implement quality assurance processes. A research profile commensurate with the expectations of the position, with evidence of successful supervision of masters and doctoral candidates and the potential to secure internal and/or external grants. Demonstrated record of leadership, with evidence of engagement with the external community, research and/or professional bodies to advance knowledge and/or practice in the field of Education. ImmunoViroTherapy Lab at the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Helsinki, invites applications for the position of a DOCTORAL RESEARCHER (Generation and tracking of armed rADV with imaging reporter genes, DC 1 in MSCA-DN INTRABRAIN) for a full-time position funded for three years. Earliest starting date is in September 2026, with the exact starting date negotiable after selection. Position Description Prof. Vincenzo Cerullo’s lab is seeking a PhD student in engineering and in vivo tracking of armed reporter oncolytic viruses. The selected PhD candidate will obtain degree at the University of Helsinki. The PhD position consists of studies at Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Helsinki (UH, Finland) and secondments at consortium partner organisations in Italy and England. The position is funded by the Doctoral Network (DN) project “INTRABRAIN” of the Horizon-Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA). The topics of the PhD candidate: The doctoral candidate will focus on engineering advanced recombinant oncolytic adenoviruses (rADVs) for glioblastoma therapy by incorporating therapeutic genes such as IL-12 or IL-2, along with imaging reporter genes to enable real-time tracking of viral activity. Their work will include designing and constructing these viral vectors, as well as validating their infectivity, biodistribution, and imaging performance in preclinical models. Through secondments at University of Naples Federico II, University of Glasgow and University of Rome Tor Vergata, the candidate will gain expertise in glioblastoma imaging in patient-derived models, neurostimulation and advanced imaging technologies such as ultrasound and MRI. Additionally, they will address potential limitations in imaging sensitivity by optimizing detection methods and applying complementary histological approaches to ensure accurate evaluation of viral distribution. INTRABRAIN Project Description The INTRABRAIN project is an ambitious and highly innovative research and training initiative aimed at revolutionising the treatment of glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) through next-generation cancer immunotherapy. By integrating cutting-edge nanotechnology, virotherapy and immunology, the project focuses on developing novel therapeutic strategies based on polymeric nanoparticles delivering engineered oncolytic adenoviruses encoding the immune-stimulating cytokines. This approach is designed to overcome major clinical challenges such as the blood–brain barrier and tumour-induced immunosuppression, enabling targeted, efficient and less invasive treatment via intranasal delivery. In parallel, INTRABRAIN fosters the training of a new generation of highly skilled doctoral researchers through interdisciplinary, intersectoral and international collaboration, equipping them with advanced scientific and transferable skills. Overall, the project aims not only to advance groundbreaking therapeutic solutions but also to contribute significantly to the future of personalised cancer medicine and biomedical innovation in Europe. Requirements To be a doctoral candidate (DC): You must, at the time of recruitment, be in the first four years (full-time equivalent) of your research career and have not been awarded a doctoral degree. Full-time equivalent research experience is measured from the date when you obtained the degree, which formally entitles you to embark on a doctorate, either in the country in which the degree was obtained or in the country in which the research training is provided, irrespective of whether or not a doctorate was envisaged. Mobility rule: At the time of the recruitment, you must not have resided or carried out your main activity (e.g. work and studies) in Finland for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to your recruitment. As a University of Applied Learning, SIT works closely with industry in our research pursuits. Our research staff will have the opportunity to be equipped with applied research skill sets that are relevant to industry demands while working on research projects in SIT.  The researcher will be part of the team of the NAMIC Project for 3DP Ship Hull Design. The Research Engineer will play a critical role in the development, validation, and optimization of 3D-printed Ship Hull and Connector System. This includes conducting finite element modeling, ship resistance and stability assessments, as well as overseeing AM process and reporting. The role also involves designing and validating connectors for the modular system to ensure mechanical integrity, printability and adaptability. Key Responsibilities Participate in and manage the research project with Principal Investigator (PI), Co-PI and the research team members to ensure all project deliverables are met. Undertake these responsibilities in the project: Resistance Analysis: Conduct simulations to analyze wave interactions, buoyancy, and stability of modular floating structures. Optimize designs for dynamic environmental conditions (e.g., waves, tides, currents). Finite Element and Structural Modeling: Develop and implement finite element models to evaluate structural integrity under load conditions. Perform stress, strain, and fatigue analysis for modular components and connectors. Stability Modeling: Analyze stability characteristics of 3DP ship hull under static and dynamic conditions. Collaborate with teams to develop safe and efficient hull design. Design and Development of Connectors: Design robust, durable connectors means for integrated multiple hull modular units Validate connector performance through simulations and physical testing. AM Process and Validation: Oversee the AM process and testing of 3DP ship hull and connector system. Data Collection and Analysis: Gather testing data during for design optimisation. Reporting and Documentation: Prepare detailed technical reports on findings, including recommendations for system enhancements. Present outcomes and progress updates to stakeholders and collaborators. Collaboration and Communication: Work closely with multidisciplinary teams, including material scientists, engineers, and field technicians. Liaise with external partners and vendors for test site setup and equipment. Compliance and Safety: Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and industry standards for marine environment. Maintain high safety standards during field operations and laboratory testing. Research Documentation and Dissemination: Prepare technical reports, research papers, and presentations to disseminate findings to academic and industry stakeholders. Contribute to project proposals and progress updates for funding agencies. Carry out Risk Assessment, and ensure compliance with Work, Safety and Health Regulations. Project Management Support: Ensure timely execution of project milestones Coordinate with external collaborators and manage data-sharing protocols. Work independently, as well as within a team, to ensure proper operation and maintenance of equipment The Research staff is to liaise with all relevant internal and external stakeholders to ensure project deliverables are met. Any other adhoc duties as assigned by Supervisor. Job Requirements Master/PhD in Naval Architecture, Ocean Engineering, Marine Engineering, Civil Engineering, or related field. Proficiency in hydrodynamic modeling tools (e.g., ANSYS AQWA or equivalent) and finite element analysis software (e.g., Abaqus, ANSYS). Experience with stability. Experience in designing connectors or mechanical interfaces is a plus. Familiarity with 3D printing technologies and materials is advantageous. Strong analytical skills and familiarity with data collection instruments and techniques. Excellent communication and report-writing abilities.
