Some high-impact advances include: 

• trialling a cutting-edge Strep A vaccine, which could protect against multiple strains of the potentially deadly bacteria
• using nasal stem cells to find new ways to treat spinal cord injury and improve quality of life for people across the globe
• discovering the world’s earliest-known Stone Age surgery and reimagining the possibilities of ancient medicine. 

Griffith works across disciplines from science and engineering to health, creative arts and social sciences, aligning interdisciplinary research tackling today’s global challenges with a strong commitment to advancing the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

The response to these challenges is driven by over 20 research centres and institutes, including the world-leading Australian Rivers Institute, Griffith Asia Institute and Institute for Biomedicine and Glycomics. Groundbreaking research hubs focused on plastic waste, education and emerging disease demonstrate Griffith’s commitment to scaling the efforts of researchers to deepen their impact and lead with purpose. 

Griffith’s world-class infrastructure and culture of innovation strongly position the University as a leader in research collaboration, attracting significant research funding for major projects. Examples include the $140 million Solving Plastic Waste Cooperative Research Centre—a national initiative to design out plastic waste from Australia’s supply chain—and the Transforming Human Origins Research Centre of Excellence. 

Innovative learning and teaching 

Home to over 70 Australian University Teacher awards and citations since 2012, Griffith has long been known as an incubator of educational innovation and excellence. The University introduced Australia’s first degrees in environmental and Asian studies—and continues to rethink and reshape learning with the introduction of highly flexible online and on-demand degrees. 

Griffith offers over 200 degrees across four academic areas: Griffith Business School, Griffith Health, Griffith Sciences, and Griffith Arts, Education and Law, which includes the Queensland College of Art and Design and Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University. 

The University’s degrees are underpinned by a strong industry focus, providing students with the resources and networks they need to succeed in their careers. This is made possible by Griffith’s extensive links to industry and communities. 

Life on campus 

Griffith recognises that learning is only part of its students’ university journey, and each campus hosts a vibrant, diverse and thriving community, with cafes and retail outlets, social events and sporting competitions. The University is also home to about 120 clubs and societies, reflecting the broad spectrum of passions and interests shared among its students. 

Griffith’s campuses boast a range of sporting and fitness facilities. These include world-class venues at the Gold Coast, with a national-standard athletics track and aquatics centre for the benefit of students, staff and local communities.
