Applicants should be established experts with an internationally recognized record of scholarship in Marine Conservation. They should possess a Ph.D. in Marine Science, Conservation Biology, Environmental Policy, or a closely related field, and demonstrate a strong research focus in one or more of the following areas: marine protected areas, marine spatial planning, policy and management, fisheries, and/or ecosystem-based conservation. A proven track record of securing competitive research funding and publishing high-impact research of regional and global relevance is essential. Particular expertise and research experience in Southeast Asia, with a focus on China, are required. The appointee will be a key member of the Swire Institute of Marine Science (SWIMS) at the University, providing academic leadership by developing a world-class research programme, mentoring junior staff and students, and contributing to teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He/She will also serve as a key academic representative of the Hong Kong and China Marine Protection Alliances – cross-sector coalitions focused on marine conservation and sustainable use of marine resources at both local and national levels. Both initiatives are funded by the Swire Trust to coordinate and amplify marine protection efforts. Exceptional candidates may also be nominated for the endowed professorship – Swire Professorship in Marine Conservation. A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, together with the University’s contribution to a retirement benefits scheme up to 15% of basic salary. At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income. Other benefits include annual leave, professional leave and medical benefits. Housing benefits will be provided as applicable. The Student Recruitment Event Team deliver all the virtual and in person events for prospective students to the University of Southampton. We are recruiting an administrator to coordinate student ambassadors to work in roles across our events. The role will advertise work opportunities, create ambassador rotas, deliver appropriate training and work with colleagues in the wider Event Team as well as academic staff and other professional services staff. The ability to work with Excel, Outlook and MS Teams as well as learn other systems such as virtual event platforms and CRM will enable you to succeed in the role. Good organising and timekeeping to administrate the multiple events through the cycle needs to be demonstrated, an understanding of Higher Education would be helpful but not essential and a willingness to support the delivery of in person and virtual events. We are looking for an individual who is committed to support the training and recruitment of ambassadors to enable them to represent the university and develop their skills in communication, presenting and customer service. Our research staff will have the opportunity to be equipped with applied research skill sets that are relevant to industry demands while working on research projects in SIT. Job Details This Research Engineer will contribute to an international joint project related to policy-making in urban planning and design, focusing on developing a Multi-Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) framework and tool. The work will involve integrating results from GeoTOPSIS and/or VectorMCDA in QGIS, enhancing spatial decision support for blue–green infrastructure and ecosystem service evaluation. The Research Engineer will lead the software development and interface programming, working closely with the GIS Research Fellow and interdisciplinary project team members to create a user-friendly, scalable decision-support tool for planners and policymakers. As part of understanding the ecosystem services that are involved in Singapore, the successful candidate will also be expected to perform some field-based data collection during the duration of the project. Key Responsibilities Work closely with the PI, Co-PI, and research team to ensure timely completion of all project deliverables. Implement and enhance GeoTOPSIS/VectorMCDA algorithms within QGIS using Python or equivalent programming frameworks. Develop a user-friendly interface (QGIS plugin or web-based application) for decision-making and data visualization. Collaborate with the GIS Research Fellow to integrate ecosystem service layers and model outputs. Conduct tool testing, validation, and iterative refinement based on stakeholder feedback. Manage documentation, data pipelines, and version control. Support system deployment on a secure project server and ensure cross-platform interoperability. Assist in project management and support the team in facilitating and organizing workshops, stakeholder sessions, and policy dialogues. Be involved in regular field work data collection and to perform environmental and biodiversity surveys (fish, birds and insects) as part of a research team. To communicate in any relevant internal or external stakeholders to ensure project deliverables are met. Any ad-hoc duties assigned by Supervisor. Job Requirements Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Geomatics, Environmental Informatics, or related fields. Strong programming skills in Python, R, or JavaScript for spatial analysis, interface development, or web applications. Experience in plugin or dashboard development (e.g., PyQGIS, Dash, Streamlit, or web-GIS frameworks). Familiarity with GIS concepts and geospatial data structures; experience with QGIS or ArcGIS will be an advantage. Ability to translate analytical models into intuitive, interactive user interfaces. Good teamwork, documentation, and problem-solving skills. Self-motivated and able to learn new tools and frameworks independently. Additional Note: While prior experience with GeoTOPSIS/VectorMCDA is not mandatory, it will be considered a strong advantage. On-the-job training will be provided to equip the candidate with necessary methods and integration workflows with ecosystem service models and spatial datasets. Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in chemical biology with a strong focus on biocatalysis. The associate will join a multi-disciplinary research team within the Schnepel group that focuses on the development of novel biocatalysts for the synthesis of fine chemicals, pharmaceuticals and bioconjugation chemistry. The research project led by Dr Christian Schnepel will involve the discovery, development and study of biocatalysts for the synthesis of peptide-based therapeutics. The successful applicant will be expected to work closely with the industry partner Johnson & Johnson in Belgium to develop cutting-edge bio-synthetic methodologies for drug discovery and large-scale manufacturing. This post is fixed term for 12 months. The MRC funding is available for this fixed period only. The post-holder is employed to work on research/a research project which will be led by another colleague. Whilst this means that the post-holder will not be carrying out independent research in his/her own right, the expectation is that they will contribute to the advancement of the project, through the development of their own research ideas/adaptation and development of research protocols.
