The Federal University of Lavras (UFLA) is a public university, founded as an agricultural college by pastor Samuel Rhea in 1908. It is located in the in the small municipality of Lavras, part of the densely populated southern Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. From 1938, the university was known as the Agricultural School of Lavras. It was federalised in 1963, and in 1994 it became Federal University of Lavras. Until 1997, the research conducted by the institution was primarily focused on agricultural sciences. Since then, the university has taken steps towards diversifying its curriculum by introducing new courses such as engineering, health sciences, law and creative writing. UFLA now has a total of 17 departments: Management and Economy; Agriculture; Biology; Computer Science; Food Sciences; Soil Sciences; Exact Science; Forest Sciences; Humanities Sciences; Education; Physical Education; Engineering; Entomology; Phytopathology; Veterinary Medicine; Chemistry; and Animal Science. The institution now offers about 30 bachelor's degrees, 20 master's degrees and 18 doctorate degrees, some of which can be studied via distance learning. The university has established partnerships with a number of Brazilian institutions, and has more than 150 partner institutions overseas, including Lancaster University in the UK. Together they offer dual PhD programmes in biodiversity, which aim to combine the knowledge and expertise of professionals from two continents. The town of Lavras is well known in Brazil for its agriculture, and is a key producer of both milk and coffee. The average annual temperature in the city is 19.6°C, and the average annual rainfall is 1,511 millimetres.

Department of Biochemistry and Developmental biology in Faculty of Medicine at the University of Helsinki is seeking a part-time (50 %) FIXED-TERM UNIVERSITY LECTURER for the period 1 March 2026 to 28 February 2028. The field of the position is translational medicine, and the language of instruction is English. The position is teaching-oriented. Duties The university lecturer will plan, coordinate and implement teaching in the English-language Master’s Programme in Translational Medicine (TRANSMED). The university lecturer also supervises theses and doctoral dissertations in the field and pursues field-related independent research activities. According to the University of Helsinki’s regulations, the successful candidate must have a suitable doctoral degree and an ability to provide high-quality research-based teaching and to supervise theses. The degree requirement must be met by the end of the application period. The position requires experience in the planning and responsibility duties of teaching, university-level small group teaching and lecturing, and practical familiarity with the field (translational medicine). Selection criteria In the assessment of applicants’ merits, consideration will be given to teaching experience, experience in positions of responsibility in teaching as well as pedagogical training, teaching development projects, the ability to produce learning materials, other merits achieved in teaching as well as a teaching demonstration if necessary. Scientific publications, other scientific activities and research funding obtained will also be considered when filling the position. In the selection process, particular emphasis will be placed on teaching experience, pedagogical training, the ability to produce learning materials, other merits achieved in teaching, and, if necessary, a teaching demonstration. Language skills According to the Decree on Universities, a university lecturer is required to be proficient in the language of instruction. In addition, they must have at least satisfactory oral and written skills in Finnish and Swedish. Salary The salary of a university lecturer is based on levels 5 – 7 of the job-related salary component chart of the universities salary system for teaching and research staff. In addition, the salary includes a component based on personal performance. Your personal sphere of influence: The Department of Demography, a subunit of the Faculty of Social Sciences, is seeking a predoctoral researcher to undertake their PhD thesis within the department over the next four years.
