The Federal University of Ceará, or UFC, was founded in 1955 in the state of Ceará, north-eastern Brazil.

The purpose of its founding was to broaden access to effective higher-education for as many people in the Ceará region as possible. As such, it is a state institution that operates multiple campuses across Ceará, in five different cities. Three of the largest campuses can be found in the city of Fortaleza, the state capital of Ceará.

Located right on the Brazilian coast, Fortaleza is one of the largest cities in the country, and a major economic hub in the region. The Fortaleza campuses are home to schools of medicine, law, and various scientific disciplines, among others. Similar facilities also exist on smaller campuses in the cities of Sobral, Barbalha, Russas, and Quizada.

Academically, the university offers over 100 undergraduate courses and a similar number of graduate equivalents, in addition over 30 doctoral courses are available as well as research opportunities. These cover a wide range of subjects from biology to law. In addition, the Federal University of Ceará also has places available for postgraduate students looking to study abroad and take in the culture and climate of South America.

Your personal sphere of influence: As a university assistant (praedoc) in this 4-year position, you will be part of the Nanoparticle Dynamics Team around Professor Paul Winkler, and you will be focusing on research topics in aerosol nanoparticle dynamics. Our research aims at fundamental process understanding in aerosol physics and practical applications in environmental settings. The research team led by Paul Winkler is an international team of innovative scientists on all levels (Master, PhD and Postdoc). Our expertise lies in experimental aerosol nanoparticle dynamics. Your future tasks: You actively participate in research, teaching & administration, which means: You are involved in a fully funded research project addressing nanoparticle detection, characterization and growth analysis. You will present your research plan to the faculty and complete a dissertation agreement within 12-18 months. This will be reviewed and adapted on an annual basis. You will work on your dissertation and towards its completion in time. We expect a large degree of independence paired with a high level of social awareness as the goal will only be achieved in a team. You will contribute to teaching (lab courses, exercise classes) within the provisions of the collective bargaining agreement. You will fill some administrative tasks, contributing to the success and self-organization of the group for research, teaching and administration. You will participate in international measurement campaigns which may include substantial travel. You will continuously stay informed about the state of the art in your field. You contribute to outreach by publications, conference presentations and public activities. As a University of Applied Learning, SIT works closely with industry in our research pursuits. Our research staff will have the opportunity to be equipped with applied research skill sets that are relevant to industry demands while working on research projects in SIT. The primary responsibility of this role is to deliver an industry innovation research project as part of a research team developing molecular and sequencing workflows for microbial characterization. The work supports the rapid detection of microbial bioburden in biopharmaceutical cleaning validation using a Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) biosensor platform. Responsibilities include next-generation sequencing (NGS), qPCR-based molecular assays for microbial quantification and aptamer validation, and experimental support for aptamer discovery targeting environmental microorganisms listed in the US Pharmacopeia. Key Responsibilities Technical Responsibilities Perform microbial community characterization using next-generation sequencing (NGS) platforms such as Illumina sequencing or Oxford Nanopore sequencing.  Design and perform qPCR-based molecular assays for microbial quantification and aptamer validation. Prepare DNA sequencing libraries, including nucleic acid extraction, amplification, and library preparation.  Conduct basic bioinformatics processing of sequencing data, including sequence quality control and taxonomic profiling where required. Support aptamer discovery and validation experiments, including nucleic acid preparation, amplification, and molecular characterization. Perform routine molecular biology techniques such as PCR, gel electrophoresis, DNA purification, and nucleic acid quantification. Maintain accurate laboratory records and experimental documentation. Research & Project Responsibilities Plan and execute experimental workflows to support project milestones related to microbial detection and biosensor development. Contribute to sequencing-based microbial profiling of environmental and cleaning validation samples. Work collaboratively with project investigators and interdisciplinary teams to integrate sequencing and molecular biology results with biosensor development. Prepare technical reports and contribute to scientific publications, presentations, and project documentation. Support generation of experimental data required for project validation and milestone reporting. Operational Responsibilities Ensure laboratory compliance with Work Safety and Health (WSH) regulations and institutional safety guidelines. Manage procurement and inventory of molecular biology and sequencing consumables. Maintain laboratory equipment used for molecular biology and sequencing workflows. Mentorship Support training of junior researchers, research assistants, and students where required.  Contribute to knowledge sharing within the research group. To communicate in any relevant internal or external stakeholders to ensure project deliverables are met. Any ad-hoc duties assigned by Supervisor. About the role This position will undertake research using the Kids and Sibs study, a longitudinal investigation examining predictors of bipolar disorder development in a high-risk population with up to 15 years of follow-up. The study includes rich phenotypic data, as well as neuroimaging and blood biomarkers (including genetic data) on up to 440 individuals, with varying lengths of follow up (PI Mitchell). The data are aligned with an international dataset (across four US Universities) ensuring opportunities for robust replication. We also encourage applicants with broad interests in neuroscience and epidemiology relating skills, as additional research opportunities are available using linked data research, and intervention development/evaluation (PI Ratheesh). Applicants with prior research expertise relating to bipolar disorder or depression are especially encouraged.
