Reporting to the Provost and Deputy Vice-Chancellor, the Pro Vice-Chancellor, Research and Innovation will provide institution-wide leadership of research and innovation for the University. Working with members of the Executive Board and Senior Leadership Team, you will be accountable for the creation, development and implementation of the Research Strategy, and ensure that the priority activities identified are delivered and supported across the University.  You will oversee the University’s research performance, doctoral college, and innovation strategy. B1 lit. b (postdoc) Limited until: 30.04.2030 Reference no.: 5330 “How does a quantum object gravitate?”, “How far can we push massive objects into the quantum regime?”, “How well can we measure gravity of microscopic systems?”. Such questions and their implications for the foundations of physics are the driving force behind our research. You will be part of our team and develop new ideas, technologies and experiments to provide new insights on macroscopic quantum physics, on gravity at small scales and, in the long run, on the phenomenology of the gravity-quantum interface in table-top experiments. Your personal sphere of play: As a University Assistant Postdoc, you will be part of the Aspelmeyer group, and you will be exploring macroscopic quantum phenomena using levitated solid-state platforms. The main research activities of our group include quantum optical control of levitated solid-state objects, the exploration of their quantum properties for fundamental questions and novel quantum technology platforms, as well as precision measurements of ultra-weak gravitational forces. Our main motivation is to explore the interface between quantum physics and gravity with new experimental platforms. Our team is part of the Quantum Optics, Quantum Nanophysics and Quantum Information group of the Faculty of Physics. We are a member of the Vienna Center for Quantum Science and Technology (VCQ), one of the largest quantum hubs in Europe, and of the Austrian Cluster of Excellence (quantA), advancing basic research in quantum sciences, aiming to expand the frontiers of knowledge and thus being the engine for future innovations. The Aspelmeyer group explores the interface between quantum physics and gravity in experiments, in particular involving quantum objects as sources of gravity. On the quantum side, we explore the extreme regime of motional quantum states of solids and their interactions to understand how to maximize mass, delocalization, and coherence time in quantum experiments. On the gravity side, we explore the extreme regime of gravitational phenomena of miniature source masses to understand how to isolate gravity from all other interactions on a microscopic scale. Together with colleagues from theory we try to formulate meaningful questions that help to establish decisive experimental tests of the quantum nature of gravity. Your future tasks: Active participation in research, teaching & administration, which means: You build up an independent research profile in the field of quantum optomechanics with levitated solid-state systems. You are involved in research projects and scientific studies in the area of quantum optical control of massive solid-state systems. You publish internationally and give lectures. You apply for projects and raise third-party funds. You hold courses independently within the scope of the provisions of the collective bargaining agreement. You supervise your students. You participate in evaluation measures and in quality assurance. You take on administrative tasks in research, teaching and administration. This is part of your personality: You have completed your doctoral/PhD studies in experimental quantum optics or AMO physics, in particular with expertise in quantum control in cryogenic ultrahigh vacuum environments. You have an outstanding dissertation. You have research competence and initiative proven through international publications in peer-relevant media. You have experience in research management and in leading project staff. You should have experience in teaching. You have IT skills and excellent laboratory skills involving quantum optical or AMO control methods in combination with cryogenic UHV environments. Knowledge: experimental experience with macroscopic quantum phenomena, including quantum optomechanics and its applications, matter-wave interferometry, AMO physics, quantum control of trapped solids, is a significant advantage. You have excellent command of written and spoken English. The position will begin in the autumn 2026 or early 2027. The position is full-time and permanent. Job description The Sustainable Materials lectureship plays a vital role in advancing knowledge and practice in sustainable materials within the Department of Design. The lecturer is expected to possess a strong understanding of materials, and use of materials in design context or from CMF field (colour-material-finish), while also bringing fresh perspectives to sustainable material innovations. The field is dynamic and expansive, covering a wide range of materials used across diverse design sectors and design applications. These may include bio-based, eco-friendly, renewable, or recycled materials applied in areas such as textile and/or product design. The role also requires proficiency in material sustainability assessment methods and close monitoring of European Commission policy developments related to materials and their use in the design, production, and recycling of products. Engagement with diverse design audiences and interesting partners—especially in manufacturing and design-driven commercial contexts—is a key part of the role. The post-holder has a doctoral degree in Design, Materials Design, Materials Research or a related field, demonstrating deep and rigorous understanding of materials development. They will teach across the Department’s undergraduate and graduate programmes and majors. Your role and goals You will support students in establishing their independent and critical thinking about the use of materials in the design process. This will include teaching, advising students through tutorial contact and undertaking curriculum development. In addition, an important part of lecturer’s duties is participation in research and research programmes. You will engage students in understanding the complex relationships between industrial organising, regulatory frameworks, sustainability issues relating to materials and design. You are able to teach assessment methods in connection to materials, material use in production, use phase and end of life stages. A successful applicant is expected to take on the following responsibilities, depending on the level of appointment: Designing and offering student-oriented, high-quality teaching and supervising at undergraduate and graduate levels.
