Basic information and contact details for Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology (DGIST)

Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science & Technology (DGIST) is a public science and engineering university located in Daegu Metropolitan City in the Republic of Korea. The Korean government established DGIST in 2004 as a national science and technology research institute and to help boost the local economy in Daegu. It then developed into a research-oriented university, offering graduate programmes in 2011 and then opening its first undergraduate programme in 2014. The university offers both undergraduate and postgraduate studies. The university focuses in six majors including emerging materials science, information and communication engineering, robotics engineering, energy systems engineering, brain and cognitive sciences and new biology. The undergraduate courses are taught under the "Transdisciplinary Curriculum with the Single Unified School" to move away from the traditional departmental system and teach students across STEM subjects as well as humanities and the social sciences. Undergraduates are also expected to conduct an undergraduate group research programme. All of the graduate courses at the university are delivered in English. The university encourages the interdisciplinary approach to education and research. It adopts the GOAL (Goal Oriented Active Learning) system so students can take a more proactive approach in their learning. Faculty at the university have authored e-books for the students so that they can better understand complicated concepts and structures through the use of 3-D animated images. Students are also able to use the e-books to acquire deeper knowledge of certain subject matters and access related information through linked keywords. The institution is a relatively small one, with just under 1,800 students in total.
