The City University of Macau (CityU Macau) inherited the legacy of the University of East Asia – the first university in Macao founded by Chinese patriots in 1981 – and was officially renamed to its current title in 2011. With the strategic outline, CityU Macau has embarked on a new phase of development. It is committed to pursue the core value of Digital Humanities, Social Sciences, and Interdisciplinary Studies underpinned by Data Science as a fully-fledged metropolitan university with Macao Characteristics, China Soul, and Global Vision.

With the motto of “Virtue, Knowledge, Practice”, the University, as one of Macao’s four comprehensive universities, adheres to the philosophy of “Serving Macao, Integrating into the Greater Bay Area.” It continues aligning its initiatives with the government’s long term development strategies to enhance academic disciplines and nurture application-orientated high-end talents to serve society. Over the past decade, CityU Macau has nurtured a wealth of high-caliber professionals who have been a key driving force behind the rapid socio-economic development in Macao, China, and further afield.

 

Quality Education: A Cradle of Versatile Talents and Entrepreneurs with International Vision

CityU Macau is the cradle of application-oriented and versatile graduates with an international vision. It currently offers about 50 Chinese-, English- and Portuguese-medium programs to nearly 13,000 students through ten faculties:

CityU Macau has set its main campus in Taipa and the other two on the Macao Peninsula, enabling students to access learning and library services across the city and to enjoy multi-campus experience. The University adopts a “5-in-1” learning model that incorporates International Learning, Experiential Learning, Intercultural Learning, Peer Learning, and Value-Added Learning to facilitate holistic development. They are encouraged to keep their fingers on the pulse of the city’s dynamics, utilizing “CityU’s power to address city’s need” while exploring its diverse cultures to cultivate a well-rounded worldview. The aim is to contribute to research excellence, promote social development, and nurture informed, proactive citizens who can help build a sustainable city that enhances the quality of life for everyone.

CityU Macau is committed to offering high-quality education. As a leading provider of hospitality and tourism management studies, it offers programs accredited with the TedQual certifications by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (“UN Tourism”, formerly known as the “UNWTO”) at all degree levels. The “Hospitality & Tourism Management” has been listed in ShanghaiRanking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects for five consecutive years, consistently placing between 51-75 globally. In the 2025 list, it achieved an impressive ranking of 37, while the “Economics” subject entered the rankings for the first time, positioning itself in the range of 301-400. In addition, the University also secures ranked in the ESI global top 1% in Social Sciences, General. 

 

Express to International Education and Global Learning

CityU Macau boasts a robust global network with 230+ universities and has played an active role in the ERASMUS+ program (European Action Scheme for Mobility of University Students), the University Mobility Asia Pacific (UMAP), and the Association of Universities of Portuguese Language (AULP). These partnerships allow students to enjoy global exchange and grow in a multicultural environment that facilitates foreign language learning. Moreover, students are encouraged to join clubs and cultural activities to horn their soft skills, make friends with similar interests and grow in a like-minded community.

Gateway to Greater Bay Area, China, and the World

The University has partnered with top research institutes and enterprises to forge a strong platform in delivering research excellence. Currently, CityU Macau has 23 distinctive research units supported by the Macao SAR government and the central government. Many of these units are the first of their kind in the region, aim at providing a breeding ground for top-notch research. With Macao’s positioning as the exchange platform between China and the Portuguese-speaking countries, the University is exposed to multicultural exchange, which can facilitate the mobility of faculty members and students globally. Moreover, it is a key partner in the Sino-Portugal Belt and Road Joint Laboratory on the Science of Cultural Heritage Conservation.

CityU Macau plays an integral part in the integration of higher education in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone. As a city where Chinese and Western cultures meet, Macao is a window to the world, in particular to Portuguese-speaking countries. The University benefits from ample opportunities and resources for expansion with policy support. Our academics provide consulting services to governments in the areas of cross-border data flows and applications between Macao and Hengqin, law, modern finance, social work services, and interdisciplinary geriatric care.
