Charles University (CU) in Prague, founded in 1348, is the oldest and largest university in the Czech Republic. It was the first university to be established in Central Europe and takes its name from its founder, King Charles IV, King of Bohemia and King of the Romans.

The university was modelled on the first European universities, Bologna and Paris in particular, and its original faculties were in theology, liberal arts, law, and medicine. 

Today, CU is a modern, multi-disciplinary and research-oriented institution that is home to more than 50,000 students undertaking bachelor, master’s and doctoral programmes,

The university comprises 17 faculties in total, including ones dedicated to Catholic Theology, Protestant Theology, Hussite Theology, as well as Law, Arts, Pharmacy, Science, Mathematics and Physics, Education, Social Sciences, Physical Education and Sport, Humanities, and five separate Medicine Faculties.

Additionally, the CU estate houses three institutes, five service facilities and six other units, all supported by a staff totalling in excess of 8,000.

Most of the university campus is spread throughout Prague, with two other centres located in the nearby cities of Hradec Králové and Pilsen.

At the centre of the university is an historic building known as the Carolinum. Found within Prague’s old town, it is the seat of the rector and the university’s Academic Senate, and is one of the oldest dormitories within Central Europe to still remain.

The university is also home to botanical gardens and boasts international links with higher education institutions such as Imperial College London, The University of Washington, Lomonosov Moscow State University, and the University of Amsterdam, publishing joint publications with each.

An exciting opportunity has arisen to work at The University of Southampton’s outstanding Southampton Sport Team as a Sports Operations Assistant (Lifeguard). We have several locations including the newly extended flag ship site, Jubilee Sport & Recreation Centre; Housing a state of the art gym and studios, climbing wall, squash courts and 25m swimming pool. As part of the wider offering we have Mayflower Gym, Wide Lane Sports ground and the Watersports Centre, which are open to students, staff and members of the wider community. The University of Southampton has invested more than £40million in our sports facilities. We offer an extensive range of sport, leisure classes and courses that are available to our customers to use from 07:00 to 22:00 Monday to Sunday. We require sports professionals to provide a consistently high-quality sport and leisure service to our customers all year round. The role  As a Lifeguard you will be part of a highly motivated and organised Southampton Sport Team responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient daily operation of the facilities. Based at Jubilee Sport and Recreation Centre on Highfield Campus. Lifeguard roles are primarily responsible for working on poolside promoting pool safety and supervision to all users. Customer queries, preparing equipment, ensuring health and safety procedures are being adhered to, and being an ambassador for active lifestyles at the University of Southampton. We encourage applications for a full time role only (36hrs per week). You will be working set hour working patterns including evenings and weekends.  About you We are seeking professional, motivated, and proactive individuals, who are brilliant team players. Roles require strong customer service skills, you may be the first point of contact dealing with a diverse range of situations. You will be responsible for health & safety of all pool users and need to always act professionally. The National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ) is essential ;however we will consider those currently working towards the NPLQ qualification. This role is subject to a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) and Right to Work check which will be conducted during the offer process. What we can offer you With a competitive starting salary of £25,249 per annum, there is an additional 10% uplift shift allowance. Lead on internal exercises and post incident reviews – Lead lessons learned activities, ensuring root causes are addressed and translated into practical, proportionate improvements. Accountability for ensuring organisational learning is embedded. Establish metrics and reporting – define and manage key performance indicators and key risk indicators to measure the effectiveness of controls and improvement efforts and which allow informed and timely decision making at senior levels of the organisation.  Support during cyber security incidents - Assisting the Director of Cyber Security and the Head of Cyber Security Operations by facilitating structured engagement between Cyber Operations, Cyber Risk & Compliance, IT Services, Communications, and other University senior stakeholders, ensuring clarity of roles, actions, and timelines. The University of Southampton in collaboration with Gham Power and Swanbarton have secured a short-term project to develop the Soluble Lead Flow Battery for installation at Gahme Power in Nepal. As a result we are seeking to appoint a fixed term 4-month research fellow to facilitate and deliver a programme of research testing aerogel thermal barrier materials within proxy and actual battery environments. You will be an mechanical engineer who holds a PhD degree or is submitting a PhD thesis before September 2026 with evidenced-supported experience of testing materials. Knowledge of electorchemcial process and physical materials properties is an advantage.  You will join a large and friendly Mechanical Engineering department and work within the Energy Technology Research Group. The project will benefit from close collaboration with other researchers and with colleagues in the collaborative project.
