The School of Modern Languages and Cultures (SMLC) Founded in 2006, the School of Modern Languages and Cultures (SMLC) is the premier center for language and area studies in Hong Kong and the region (ranked 17th in QS World University 2025 subject rankings for modern languages) and is the most international part of the university. The School offers 3 undergraduate majors (Global and Area Studies, Japanese Studies, and Korean Studies) and 13 language programmes (Arabic, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swedish, Thai, and Turkish). Undergraduate students in all 3 majors are expected to embark on two to three years of language study, complemented by area studies courses taught in the English medium of instruction. The School also offers research postgraduate (MPhil and PhD) programmes and will be launching taught postgraduate (MA) programmes. The Role The Head of the School of Modern Languages and Cultures is expected to: Provide visionary leadership and strategic direction to the School, ensuring it aligns with the academic missions of HKU over two 3-year terms. Develop and uphold the highest international standards of research and teaching, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration across global and area studies, literary studies, cultural studies, international relations, and emerging fields in the humanities. Optimise the deployment of human, financial and other resources in the School. Cultivate an inclusive and vibrant intellectual community that attracts top-tier scholars and students, fostering dialogue across languages, cultures, and disciplines. Expand the School’s international collaborations and networks, reinforcing its role as a leading hub for global dialogue on language, culture, and transnational studies. Qualifications and Qualities PhD in a related field and of stature equivalent to full or chair professor rank. A distinguished record of academic achievements and international recognition in research, scholarship, and teaching. Be a leading researcher. Expertise in area, field, and period is open, but should have a deep focus on at least one region of the world. Experts in Central Asia, East Asia (Japan and/or Korea), Europe, Latin America, Middle East, and Southeast Asia are encouraged to apply. Able to teach, conduct, and publish research, and perform administrative functions in English, and applicants are expected to have comprehensive professional proficiency in one or more of the 13 languages currently offered by SMLC and/or other languages. Candidates will be expected to demonstrate this proficiency during the interview process. Candidates with experience supervising teaching units with language staff are highly encouraged to apply. About us: This post will be based in the Health Psychology Section of the Department of Psychology, at King’s College London, embedded within a dynamic team that brings together expertise in long-term condition management, complex intervention development (including digital health), randomized controlled trials, and implementation research. The Health Psychology Section has played a pivotal role in shaping the discipline within the UK and is internationally recognised for excellence in both research and teaching. Our work spans fundamental research into the psychosocial processes underlying adaptation to long-term conditions and the experience of symptoms, as well as translational research testing the efficacy and effectiveness of theory-based psychological interventions for people living with long-term conditions. We are also at the forefront of developing and evaluating innovative methods to support self-management of health, symptoms, mood, and adherence, with a strong emphasis on digital interventions. About the role: The post-holder will be responsible for the overall administrative management of the NIHR-funded REFUEL-MS grant. REFUEL-MS is a £2.7 million, 5.5-year programme grant for applied research, funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) and the MS Society. We are currently just over three years into the programme. The grant is led by Professor Rona Moss-Morris at King’s College London, in collaboration with the University of Northumbria, Bournemouth University, Queen Margaret University, the University of Plymouth, a Lived Experience Advisory Group, and the MS Society. The overall aim of REFUEL-MS is to integrate existing components of exercise and behavioural interventions into an individually tailored, health care professional-supported digital fatigue treatment. We have completed the first three work packages and are currently running work package 4, a randomised controlled trial to evaluate the clinical and cost effectiveness of REFUEL-MS, with completion expected by the end of 2026. The fifth and final work package will begin implementation of REFUEL-MS in four UK MS services, exploring barriers and facilitators to future adoption. The Programme Manager will play a central role in strategically managing and coordinating all work packages within REFUEL-MS. This includes overseeing the budget, ensuring that each project is delivered on time, and maintaining adherence to standard operating procedures. The role requires close collaboration with the central research team at King’s College London and the Programme Management Group, ensuring effective communication and coordination across partner institutions and stakeholders. This is a key leadership position within a complex, multi-disciplinary, multi-institutional programme. The successful candidate will need strong organisational skills, the ability to manage competing priorities, and experience in overseeing large-scale research projects including clinical trials. They will be expected to support the delivery of high-quality outputs, facilitate smooth collaboration across teams, and contribute to the successful implementation of REFUEL-MS in NHS services. This is a full-time (35 hours per week) fixed term post ending on the 31st March 2028.
