Located in the city Bakersfield in the San Joaquin Valley of California, California State University-Bakersfield (CSUB) opened in 1970 and became the 19th member of the California State University system, which now has 23 member institutions.

The university has two campuses – the main 375-acre campus in Bakersfield and a satellite campus in the nearby Antelope Valley – which together host over 9,200 students.

The majority of CSUB students study at undergraduate level although there are master’s courses available, as well as the professional development, certificate, and degree programs available from CSUB’s Extended University.

Both campuses enjoy a prime location in the heart of southern California. Los Angeles is just over 100 miles from the main Bakersfield campus, giving students the option to explore one of America’s most energetic and vibrant cities.

Bakersfield itself has a lot to offer, with a rich culture and located a short distance from the Pacific coast.

With more than 85 student organisations and a well-established set of sports teams, known as the Roadrunners, there are plenty of opportunities for students outside of academia. The Roadrunners compete in the NCAA Division I, with seven male and ten female sports teams currently featured.

There are four main academic schools at CSUB – Arts and Humanities, Business and Public Administration, Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Engineering, and Social Sciences and Education – which between them offer more than 50 bachelor’s and master’s degree programs.

Notable former students include Roy Ashburn, California State Senator, slam poet Big Poppa E, and MMA and UFC champion Tito Ortiz.

Applicants should possess a medical qualification registrable with the Medical Council of Hong Kong, with a specialist qualification in ophthalmology recognized by the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine or its equivalent. Candidates should have proven research capacity and an outstanding track record of active research, including high-impact output, external competitive grants, and awards, along with a strong commitment to clinical excellence and training, as well as experience in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. They must display strong clinical acumen and skills in the relevant specialty, with demonstrated experience teaching medical students, interns, and trainees, while proven ability to initiate and contribute to basic, clinical, or translational research is essential. Fluency in Cantonese, Putonghua, and English is preferred. Preference is given to those with a track record in research governance, university and hospital administration, while higher academic qualifications (e.g., MD, MS, PhD) are advantageous. Those with less qualifications and experience may be considered for appointment as Clinical Associate Professor or Clinical Assistant Professor. There will be opportunities for academic growth, career development and mentorship, with protected time for educational and clinical research activities, depending on the appointees’ interests and accomplishments. The appointees are expected to conduct research and teaching in ophthalmology, develop and provide regular clinical services and patient care at the HKU Eye Centre and the University’s affiliate teaching hospitals; and contribute to administrative duties in the Department, Hospitals and Faculty. Acting as liaison with a wide range of university academic and professional staff to ensure the provision of an effective and efficient service within available resources including appropriate referrals to other university services, including Health, Counselling and Disability, you will also provide support to the Access and Outreach Project Officer for outreach activities run by YSE. Each day will bring you a variety of tasks, from facilitating student access to culturally safe spaces, referrals and relevant support services including tutoring, Health, Counselling and Disability services, housing, ABSTUDY, scholarships and cadetships/internships and other available services, to the provision of direct support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to develop individual learning plans. You can be guaranteed that no two days will be exactly the same! There may be a requirement for the Indigenous Student Success Officer to work after hours, weekends and travel interstate.
