The Estate Development team is about to embark on delivering our new Estate Plan. The plan sets out to develop an estate of the right scale and configuration to underpin a campus that is both financially and environmentally sustainable. The quality of the estate will continue to be a critical factor in attracting students, fostering a sense of belonging and sustaining positive outcomes for our students and research activity. All new projects will look to advance the University’s net zero ambitions, deliver greater biodiversity across campus, expand electrification and upgrade infrastructure to make sure the University is ready for the challenges ahead. The Environmental Sustainability and Energy Team is a small but high impact team; in 2025 it achieved Eco Campus Platinum and ISO50001 Certification and supported the institution to reach 15th place in the People and Planet University League. We have an exciting opportunity for an individual to join this driven and passionate team to lead on the implementation of two key sustainability delivery plans. We are looking for an Environmental Sustainability Manager who will be responsible for coordinating and delivering numerous workstreams under the Liverpool John Moores University Climate and Sustainability Plan. You will work to embed environmental sustainability into university day-to-day operations and support the university’s ambition of achieving Net Zero Carbon. The role will require flexibility across all sustainability themes, but key responsibilities will be to implement the Biodiversity and Active and Sustainable Travel Delivery Plans and to support the maintenance of the Environmental and Energy Management System (ISO14001/ISO50001 aligned). You will be based within Estate Development but will be expected to engage with key stakeholders and collaborate across university professional, academic and student communities to coordinate and drive activity to deliver continuous performance improvement. You will have a degree (or equivalent professional experience) in Ecology, Environmental Science, Sustainability, Natural Resource Management, or a related discipline; strong knowledge of biodiversity and ecological monitoring, including key species groups (birds, pollinators, bats); experience of ecological survey design, coordination, data collection, analysis, and reporting; have knowledge of relevant UK and regional policy frameworks relating to biodiversity, green infrastructure, sustainable transport, and climate resilience; have strong project management and organisational skills with the ability to deliver complex projects to budget and timescale. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are essential with the ability to engage and influence diverse stakeholders. Applicants should possess a medical qualification registrable with the Medical Council of Hong Kong, and a higher professional qualification of Specialty Fellowship of the relevant Hong Kong College under the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine or equivalent. They should have demonstrated accomplishment in teaching of medical undergraduates, and organization and development of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Those with an established research record, substantial achievements in research publications and a track record of successful grant applications would have an advantage. They should also have extensive experience in managing patients with acute and chronic medical problems in internal medicine. The appointee is expected to supervise junior doctors; deliver clinical service and patient care at the University’s teaching hospitals; participate in the planning and delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes; conduct research; and contribute to administrative duties in the Department, Hospitals and Faculty. Current research directions include: Reversible material representation methods for accelerated inverse design Large language, diffusion & graph neural models for materials discovery Fine tuning and architecture optimisation of foundation models Inverse design of next generation functional materials (e.g. energy, sustainability) The group partners closely with leading institutes in Hong Kong, Shenzhen, and worldwide, offering an exciting, collaborative research environment. The appointee will work as part of the team. This involves (1) conducting independent and collaborative research leading to publications in top tier journals and conferences; (2) contributing to grant proposal writing and collaborative projects; and (3) mentoring junior researchers and assisting with laboratory management. Requirements The candidate should have obtained / been conferred a PhD degree or an equivalent qualification in Materials Science, Mechanical / Applied Mechanics, Physics, Computer Science, Data Science, or a closely related field for no more than three years prior to the commencement of the appointment. The candidates should have a strong track record in at least one of the group’s research areas, preferably demonstrated by publications in high-impact venues. Experience with machine learning frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, JAX) and / or computational materials methods is essential. Additionally, the candidate should possess an excellent command of written and spoken English and demonstrate the ability to work independently as well as part of a multidisciplinary team.
