The PatentsInHumans project aims to develop a deeper understanding of, whether and to what extent bioethical issues posed by patent grant and use over technologies related to the human body are currently considered, if at all, within the relevant legal and other decision-making systems in Europe. The post holder will work with Prof Aisling McMahon (Principal Investigator), School of Law and Criminology, Maynooth University to conduct empirical research with relevant stakeholders, including patients, medical practitioners, members of the legal community, etc to further our understandings of how patent rights can impact access to health-technologies, and potential impacts of this on healthcare, including bioethical implications. They will work with the PI to conduct semi-structured interviews and focus groups with relevant experts and stakeholders to gain qualitative understandings of the potential bioethical implications posed by patents over such technologies and to develop deeper understandings of any challenges to engaging with these under the current decision-making systems in Europe. Post-Doctoral Researcher Level 1 (2026) Salary Scale: €47,273 – € 47,880 p.a. (2 points) Appointments will be made in accordance with public sector pay provisions. The Cancer Research UK core funded Southampton Clinical Trials Unit (SCTU), based at Southampton General Hospital, has expertise in the design, conduct and publication of clinical trials and other well-designed studies from first-in-human phase I to practice changing phase III trials. Managing a growing portfolio (75% cancer, 25% non-cancer) that covers the complete spectrum of clinical practice, from primary care through to tertiary referral medicine, including pan-cancer experimental therapeutics, surgery, radiotherapy and early diagnosis. Undertaking academically sponsored multi-centre early and late phase clinical trials, we work nationally and internationally to create the evidence for patient benefit that will directly influence routine clinical practice in the NHS and overseas. Due to expansion, we currently have a vacancy for a Senior Trial Manager to join the existing cancer portfolio team. The Senior Trial Manager will be responsible for the oversight of trials ensuring they are delivered according to required standards, time and budget. This is a senior post within the CTU with advisory, leadership, engagement, and line management responsibilities. The appointed Senior Trial Manager will work specifically on a single trial developing SCTU expertise into clinical collaboration opportunities with industry partners, where an academically sponsored trial will result is supporting MHRA drug licencing, which aims to fulfil faster movement from research to patient access. The successful candidate will have significant experience of trial management gained through working on interventional clinical trials, including experience of IMP management, and have excellent knowledge of legislation, regulation and governance environments relating to clinical trials. The Senior Trial Manager will be required to work with multiple stakeholders so must have an excellent communication style and experience of matrix management, as well as the ability to multi-task, meet deadlines and be a good leader and line manager. Experience of regulatory affairs including submitting drugs for licencing would be an advantage.
