Algoma University (often shortened to Algoma U or Algoma) is an undergraduate-only public university in Ontario Canada. It was first established as Algoma College in 1965 as part of an affiliation with Laurentian University in Sudbury, Canada.
It achieved full university status in 2008 and now offers over 30 academic programmes through three faculties: Faculty of Sciences, Faculty of Social Sciences and Faculty of Humanities.
Students have the opportunity to undertake research at the university through work placements, the Undergraduate Student Research Awards and the Experiential Learning Hub among others.
There is a wide range of clubs and extracurricular activities that students can get involved with ranging from computer science club, queer coffee club, table top games club and cricket club among others.
There are three campuses: Sault Ste. Marie, Timmins and Brampton. Sault Ste. Marie is the the main campus and is located in the heart of the Great Lakes. The Brampton campus is in the lively city of Brampton in Greater Toronto. This is where college graduates and mature students will be able to study for the accelerated Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degrees Timmins is located on the Northern College of Applied Arts and Technology campus in Northern Ontario and offers bachelor's degrees in social work and community development.
Shingwauk Hall, which is an integral part of Algoma University, was first set up in 1873 as a residential school for First Nations children (Chief Shingwauk was an Anishinaabe chief, who was instrumental in the establishment of the Garden River First Nation near Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario). It is currently used to house various classrooms, as well as administrative and faculty offices.

Description We are looking to hire a Junior Research Scientist or engineer to help us design and build novel systems and tools for decision-making support. A successful candidate should be able to design and implement systems and tools as well as demonstrate their efficacy through comparative performance evaluations or user studies. They should be able to work independently or as part of a team, depending on the project's scope. As we publicly share all our code and data artifacts, good coding & reproducible experimentation practices are a must. We meet frequently to provide short status updates and have regular technical 1-1s to dive deep into research problems. Successful RAs or REs present their work, progress, and challenges concisely and clearly. They should be keen about publishing their work and findings and strive to meet deadlines. A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering is required. The candidate should also demonstrate experience and excellence in systems or tool building, algorithmic thinking, and research. The ability to program in Python, C++, and other frameworks is a must. Comfort with declarative programming, SQL, and data management is highly desired. Promoting Policy Influence and Thought Leadership: The Dean positions the School as a thought leader by actively contributing to policy discussions, influencing public discourse, and advising on critical issues. This involves promoting research that informs policy, participating in advisory boards, or partnering with government agencies to address pressing societal concerns. Financial Management Empower the School’s senior team to manage devolved budgets and income and expenditure to promote financial sustainability in line with agreed KPIs. QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE Advanced Academic Credentials: A PhD or equivalent degree in a field of the humanities and social sciences. This demonstrates a profound understanding of the academic environment and the ability to make significant contributions to research and teaching. Proven Research and Teaching Excellence: A strong record of scholarly research, evidenced by publications in top-tier, peer-reviewed international journals and prestigious presses in humanities and social sciences-related disciplines. A track record of effective teaching at both undergraduate and graduate levels, preferably in an international context. Academic Leadership Experience: Significant experience in academic administration, such as serving as a School Dean, associate Dean and department chair, or in similar leadership roles where they were responsible for overseeing staff, managing budgets, and developing academic programmes. Experience with staff development, curriculum design, research leadership, internationalisation and strategic planning. Global Perspective and International Experience: Experiences of working in international academic institutions. Familiarity with global higher education and cross-cultural management, as well as an understanding of how to adapt humanities and social sciences education to diverse cultural and economic contexts. Strong Industry and Corporate Relations: Extensive engagement with the local community, government agencies, and industry associations. Experience in fostering relationships that lead to internships, work placements, and collaborations for students and staff. A proven ability to secure external funding, sponsorships, and build strong alumni networks. Academic Quality Assurance: Leadership experience in ensuring high standards in teaching, research, and student experience to maintain quality assurance.
