Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike was originally established in 2011 as Federal University Ndufu-Alike. It was founded by the Federal Government with the aim of expanding and improving access to education in all areas of Nigeria. In 2018 it was renamed Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike in honour of Alex Ifeanyichukwu Ekwueme, the late Vice President of Nigeria.
The university is located in Abakaliki, the capital of Ebonyi State, southeastern Nigeria.
There are 11 faculties at the university: agriculture, basic medical sciences, biological science, education, engineering and technology, environmental sciences, humanities, management sciences, physical science, medical sciences, and social sciences. Each faculty is divided into different departments, which offer both undergraduate and graduate degree programmes.
The Entrepreneurship and Employability Centre was set up by the university to equip students with the skills and knowledge required to succeed in the global economy. The centre regularly hosts a number of workshop and training sessions, career planning services and entrepreneurial courses.
Research is carried out in a range of areas including food security, climate change, renewable energy, and environmental sustainability.
