The Department of Applied Physics is now looking for a

Postdoctoral Researcher in Optics and Photonics

We are looking for an outstanding postdoc to join the Optics and Photonics group for theoretical and experimental research on nanophotonics. The research will be focused on the development of novel approaches to design, create, and investigate photonic metasurfaces that efficiently trap light and enhance nonlinear optical phenomena. The position is fully funded by the Research Council of Finland and involves collaboration with researchers from the Department of Electronics and Nanoengineering at Aalto University, as well as international collaboration with a research team from the Netherlands.

Your role and goals

In this position, you will act as a researcher working on design and characterization of nonlinear metasurfaces supporting resonant optical modes known as photonic bound states in the continuum. The design will be based on numerical modelling methods. The samples will be fabricated using the cleanroom facilities of Aalto University and investigated by nonlinear optical methods using the equipment of the Optics and Photonics group.

As a member of the group, you will:


	use your knowledge and experience to achieve scientific breakthroughs in research on nonlinear metasurfaces and bound states in the continuum,
	advance the field by overcoming existing challenges and developing new scientific ideas,
	support research activities of other group members,
	write and publish high-impact articles,
	collaborate with other research groups, including participation in international research visits.


​Your experience and ambitions

Minimal requirements for the candidate are:


	doctoral degree in physics, photonics, materials science, or another relevant field,
	excellent scientific writing skills evidenced by publications in peer-reviewed journals,
	high level of understanding of principles of optics and photonics, especially related to nonlinear optics at the nanoscale and optical properties of periodic structures,
	familiarity with the relevant theoretical and experimental methods, such as numerical simulations and optical microscopy.
	excellent command of English; Finnish language is not required.


​Preference will be given to candidates with hands-on experience in conducting nonlinear optical experiments using ultrashort laser pulses and previous contributions to research on nonlinear metasurfaces and photonic bound states in the continuum.

What we offer

Aalto University follows the salary system of Finnish universities. The salary of a postdoc is in the range 4020 € - 4420 €/month (gross), depending on experience. The contract will be made initially for one year, with a possibility of extension. We expect the selected candidate to start the work in January 2025 or soon after. The annual workload of research and teaching staff at Aalto University is currently 1612 hours. The contract includes Aalto University occupational healthcare.

The University of Surrey, in collaboration with Anaphylaxis UK, a leading allergy charity, are seeking a passionate early-career Clinical Psychologist or Health Psychologist to spearhead a groundbreaking Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) Project.

For 30 years, Anaphylaxis UK have been empowering people with serious allergies and their families by providing evidence-based information across various sectors. Now, they’re taking a bold step towards mental health. 

The KTP aims to revolutionise allergy-related anxiety care.


	Develop and train staff to deliver a bespoke, digitised Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)-based intervention specifically designed to reduce allergy-related anxiety.
	Enhance the skills of volunteer support group leaders and helpline staff through training, consultation, and clinical leadership, as part of developing a psychologically informed environment (PIE). 
	Position Anaphylaxis UK as a leader in tackling allergy-related mental health challenges, ultimately improving lives and reducing healthcare burden.


This position is based with Anaphylaxis UK in Farnborough, Hampshire - the Charity is currently operating VIRTUALLY. You will be supported by a team of renowned experts from the University of Surrey, including Professor Christina Jones and Dr Warren Matofsky (School of Psychology). 

This role is perfect for a highly motivated Clinical Psychologist or Health Psychologist who is:


	Doctoral level trained in clinical psychology or health psychology (accredited by the British Psychological Society).
	HCPC registered.
	Experienced in complex clinical assessment, intervention, and case management (requires sustained focus and emotional resilience).
	Committed to developing as a trainer, supervisor, and leader of innovative clinical services.
	Excited by the opportunity to work therapeutically and engage in research with children, young people, adults, and families.
	Experience in doctoral-level research (design, analysis with-SPSS/Jamovi, interpretation and dissemination).

The Natural Resources Institute (NRI – https://www.nri.org/) of the University of Greenwich carries out specialised research, teaching, training and consultancy with a focus on food, agriculture, environment and sustainable livelihoods. NRI is looking to appoint a Laboratory Technical Coordinator to support and contribute to research projects, as well as NRI’s activities related in these areas. It is anticipated that the successful candidate will coordinate space availability and maintain the laboratories, controlled environments, and greenhouse facilities in compliance with ISO 9001:2015, industry standards and quarantine regulations. The role will also provide technical support whilst adhering to correct procedures and ensuring a safe working environment. Working as part of a small team, the post holder will facilitate the successful delivery of research projects and laboratory and field teaching activities.

Strong team leadership skills, a proven track record in project management, physically able to do heavy lifting and excellent communication abilities are essential. The advertised position is situated within the Advertising & Media Psychology Research Group, led by Professor Jörg Matthes. Birmingham City University invites applications for Senior Lecturer in Cyber Security to support and advance its growth in the cyber security discipline.

As a Senior Lecturer, you will be expected to contribute to the subject leadership at module and course levels, managing module and course teams to deliver student outcomes. Further, you will contribute to design and development of curriculum in-line with market trends and cutting-edge within the subject.

You will be expected to support teaching and learning for undergraduate/postgraduate modules, provide pastoral care to students, engage in cutting-edge research, and contribute to recruitment and outreach activities. You will possess core cybersecurity skillset with strong experience of teaching at university level within different topics of cybersecurity. You will also have a proven track record of publishing research articles at reputable venues and an ability to develop research proposals to seek external funding. You will be passionate about supporting students through their educational journey and keen to learn and adopt inclusive practices to engage with students from diverse abilities and backgrounds.

With core cyber security skills and knowledge, candidates with expertise in Cyber Physical Systems, Digital Forensics, Machine Learning and AI, and Future Networks are particularly encouraged to apply. Membership of a professional bodies (such as the BCS, the IET, ISACA or ISC2), industry-recognised certifications, and professional registration (such as CITP or CEng) is also beneficial.
