Addis Ababa University, based in Ethiopia, was founded in 1950 making it the oldest university in the country. Students can study a variety of subjects at undergraduate, graduate and PhD level within the following faculties: biological engineering, social sciences, humanities, language studies, journalism and communication, development studies, business and economics, law and governance studies, education and behavioural studies, natural and computational sciences, veterinary medicine and agriculture and health science. In addition, the university has several associated research institutions including the Institute of Ethiopian Studies. To aid medical study, there are two teaching hospitals. Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital, (TASH) housed at College of Health Sciences, has 700 beds offering student training in a range of areas. The Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH) is located at Debre Zeit Campus with the College of Veterinary Medicine and Agriculture. Between 15 and 20,000 animals visit the VTH each year to receive different kinds of treatments giving students practical experience outside of the classroom. There are 13 separate campuses for students to explore. Twelve of these are situated in Addis Ababa, and one is located in Bishoftu, about 45km away. The main university library (John F. Kennedy Memorial Library) is located on the main campus (at Sidist Kilo), holding an extensive amount of study material for students. For students with an interest in sport, there’s a sports complex, which includes playing fields and courts. There are also plenty of clubs to join as well as annual competitions where students can represent the university. The university has established relationships with universities around the world, carrying out various exchange activities such as academic exchanges, scientific research cooperation and the opportunity for students to study abroad. The university welcomes students to its campus.
