University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) offers opportunities for inquiry, discovery, and education – and yet is a close community that provides a sense of belonging.

The campus is home to world-renowned faculty who teach in 230 undergraduate and graduate majors, with more than two dozen academic programmes ranked among the top 20 in their disciplines. The faculty provide more than 5,000 courses annually, with two-thirds of undergraduate classes having fewer than 30 students.

For many freshmen, the undergraduate experience begins with a year-long Cluster Course, a team-taught exploration of a challenging interdisciplinary topic.

In addition, 200 Fiat Lux Seminars are offered, taught by senior faculty in small-group settings in which freshmen have priority enrolment. Undergraduate research projects are available as early as freshman year, and more than half of UCLA students graduate with research experience in the humanities, social sciences, or STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) disciplines.

UCLA also encourages students to study abroad – more than 2,400 do so each year – with more than 275 programmes in 39 countries.

Community service is also a cornerstone of undergraduate education at UCLA. Students can participate through programmes at the Volunteer Center – with more than 220 student groups engaged in community service – as well as on Volunteer Day, which brings together 8,000 UCLA volunteers annually.

For more activities outside the classroom, UCLA offers 1,000 student organisations providing students with ample opportunity to pursue interests and projects with fellow students. UCLA is home to leading research centres and institutes, top performing arts programmes, an elite Division I athletics programme and the preeminent hospital in the Western United States.

Job Description FACULTY OF SCIENCE DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS The Department has focus research areas in (a) Advanced Materials & Energy and (b) Biophysics & Complex Systems. The School occupies facilities across the Guy’s, St Thomas’ and Denmark Hill campuses of King’s College London and comprises over 65 academic groups, hosting 400 staff and 110 PhD students.  About The Role The School of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Medicine & Sciences (SCMMS) is inviting applicants for the role of Technician to join a dynamic team in the Diabetes and Obesity Theme at the Guy’s Campus. This role provides comprehensive operational and technical support within a laboratory environment, encompassing the maintenance of consumables, equipment, inventories, and service facilities, as well as participation in key operational rotas. The post holder will apply a broad range of technical skills, support Health & Safety compliance, contribute to sustainability initiatives, and deliver training and guidance to staff and students —including new-user training for specialist facilities. The position involves managing a varied workload, resolving routine and complex issues, management of essential resources, and ensuring effective communication across research teams to deliver high quality technical support. The role also includes engaging in professional development, building networks within King’s, and fostering an inclusive, safe, and efficient working environment.  This is a full time post and you will be offered an indefinite contract. Research Fellow in Geophysics

We seek a Research Fellow with a proven publication record to apply novel approaches to integration of seismic velocity and resistivity models derived from a recently acquired coincident wide-angle seismic, controlled source electromagnetic (CSEM) and magnetotelluric (MT) dataset. We are particularly looking for someone with skills in the application of rock physics models to seismic and/or resistivity data but will also consider applicants with experience more focused in relevant geophysical data analysis. The Research Fellow will join an international team in the project “Quantifying evolution of magmatism and serpentinization during the onset of seafloor spreading”, funded by the UK Natural Environment Research Council and the US National Science Foundation. The overall aim of this project is to quantify the evolution of serpentinisation and magmatism at a magma-poor rifted margin as seafloor spreading is initiated. Serpentinised mantle rocks are generally more conductive, often by about an order of magnitude, than mafic crustal rocks, so CSEM and MT techniques provide a promising route to resolve controversies around lithospheric structure. In August-September 2023, we conducted the first joint CSEM, MT and seismic experiment in the continent-ocean transition at a rifted margin, to determine how competing processes of magmatism and serpentinisation evolve during the initiation of seafloor spreading. We focused our work at the sediment-starved Goban Spur rifted margin southwest of the UK, which is uniquely suited to such a study because of its thin sediment cover, narrow continent-ocean transition and existing covering with deep seismic reflection data. The position is based in the School of Ocean and Earth Science, which is located at the University of Southampton’s Waterfront Campus at the National Oceanography Centre Southampton. The research fellow will collaborate with project partners at the National Oceanography Centre, Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the University of Bremen.  Informal enquiries should be directed to Prof. Tim Minshull (tmin@soton.ac.uk).
