Job Description FACULTY OF SCIENCE DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS The Department has focus research areas in (a) Advanced Materials & Energy and (b) Biophysics & Complex Systems. Interdisciplinary research is actively promoted by the Faculty of Science, fostered under the University-wide six Interdisciplinary Labs (https://interdisciplinary-research.hkbu.edu.hk/), and supported by state-of-the-art infrastructure and facilities, such as the Life Science Imaging Centre (https://research.hkbu.edu.hk/resources/facilities-and-labs/hkbu-life-science-imaging-centre). Being part of a rapidly evolving research and educational landscape in the region, the Department strives to nurture leadership in emerging fields of transdisciplinary science, in particular advanced materials and device physics for biomedical/healthcare and green energy applications, big data and AI in smart sensor technology, and quantitative and systems biology. These efforts are supported by infrastructural and internationalisation initiatives at the University level and grounded on the Department's research achievements (evidenced by extensive international collaborations, external reviews such as Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), start-up companies and prestigious awards). The Department invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank Professor / Associate Professor / Assistant Professor. Professor / Associate Professor / Assistant Professor (25260372) Responsibilities: The appointees will perform high-impact research, teach and supervise students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and contribute to professional and institutional services. Collaboration with other faculty members in research and teaching is also expected. Requirements: The candidates should have a PhD degree in Physics, Microelectronics, Advanced Materials or other relevant disciplines, a proven track record of collaborative research and a strong commitment to teaching. Experimental scientists with strong expertise in soft matters, biomaterials, flexible electronics, and electronics with living systems for applications in health monitoring, biomedical sensor devices, and multi-functional human-machine interaction, such as wearable electronics, microchip implant for machine-brain interface, tissue repair, and disease diagnosis, monitoring and treatment, are especially encouraged to apply. About Us The School of Cardiovascular & Metabolic Medicine & Sciences (SCMMS) provides an outstanding multi-disciplinary environment for the pursuit of cutting-edge cardiovascular and metabolic research (https://www.kcl.ac.uk/scms).  We study the fundamental molecular, cellular, and physiological processes that underly normal and abnormal cardiovascular and metabolic function and we drive the translation of this strong basic science into advances in clinical practice to improve prevention, diagnosis and treatment. The School occupies facilities across the Guy’s, St Thomas’ and Denmark Hill campuses of King’s College London and comprises over 65 academic groups, hosting 400 staff and 110 PhD students.  About The Role The School of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Medicine & Sciences (SCMMS) is inviting applicants for the role of Technician to join a dynamic team in the Diabetes and Obesity Theme at the Guy’s Campus. This role provides comprehensive operational and technical support within a laboratory environment, encompassing the maintenance of consumables, equipment, inventories, and service facilities, as well as participation in key operational rotas. The post holder will apply a broad range of technical skills, support Health & Safety compliance, contribute to sustainability initiatives, and deliver training and guidance to staff and students —including new-user training for specialist facilities. The position involves managing a varied workload, resolving routine and complex issues, management of essential resources, and ensuring effective communication across research teams to deliver high quality technical support. The role also includes engaging in professional development, building networks within King’s, and fostering an inclusive, safe, and efficient working environment.  This is a full time post and you will be offered an indefinite contract. About You To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience: Essential criteria Minimum level 3 qualification, e.g. A levels, AS levels, International Baccalaureate diploma or other Level 3 qualification, plus laboratory work experience in relevant technical/scientific posts in biomedical research OR Considerable knowledge and skills in laboratory-based biomedical research gained through work experience in relevant technical or scientific posts.  Evidence of an active commitment to career development including professional registration, such as RSciTech or RSci and clear progression in increasingly demanding jobs.  Knowledge and practical use of a range of relevant technical skills and their environmental impact. Applicants should have experience in at least three of the following technical areas: histology, molecular biology, cell culture, fluorescence microscopy, immunoassays, quantifying cellular metabolic activity or in vivo work.  Ability to apply learnt techniques to the work context.  Working knowledge of regulations and best practice governing biomedical research, including Health & Safety and environmental sustainability.  Clear spoken and written communication skills, with proficient computer use and strong interpersonal and influencing/behavioural skills. We seek a Research Fellow with a proven publication record to apply novel approaches to integration of seismic velocity and resistivity models derived from a recently acquired coincident wide-angle seismic, controlled source electromagnetic (CSEM) and magnetotelluric (MT) dataset. We are particularly looking for someone with skills in the application of rock physics models to seismic and/or resistivity data but will also consider applicants with experience more focused in relevant geophysical data analysis. The Research Fellow will join an international team in the project “Quantifying evolution of magmatism and serpentinization during the onset of seafloor spreading”, funded by the UK Natural Environment Research Council and the US National Science Foundation. The overall aim of this project is to quantify the evolution of serpentinisation and magmatism at a magma-poor rifted margin as seafloor spreading is initiated. Serpentinised mantle rocks are generally more conductive, often by about an order of magnitude, than mafic crustal rocks, so CSEM and MT techniques provide a promising route to resolve controversies around lithospheric structure. In August-September 2023, we conducted the first joint CSEM, MT and seismic experiment in the continent-ocean transition at a rifted margin, to determine how competing processes of magmatism and serpentinisation evolve during the initiation of seafloor spreading. We focused our work at the sediment-starved Goban Spur rifted margin southwest of the UK, which is uniquely suited to such a study because of its thin sediment cover, narrow continent-ocean transition and existing covering with deep seismic reflection data. The position is based in the School of Ocean and Earth Science, which is located at the University of Southampton’s Waterfront Campus at the National Oceanography Centre Southampton.
