Imperial College London, a science-based institution based in the centre of the capital, is regarded as one of the UK’s leading institutions.

The college has around 15,000 students and 8,000 staff, with a focus on four main areas: science, engineering, medicine and business.

The institution has its roots in the vision of Prince Albert to make London’s South Kensington a centre for education, with colleges going alongside the nearby Natural History Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum and Science Museum.

Imperial was granted its charter in 1907, merging the Royal College of Science, the Royal School of Mines and the City & Guilds College.

The institution boasts 14 Nobel Prize winners, including Sir Alexander Fleming, the discoverer of penicillin.

Famous alumni include science fiction author H.G. Wells, Queen guitarist Brian May, former prime minister of India Rajiv Gandhi, former UK chief medical officer Sir Liam Donaldson, and former chief executive of Singapore Airlines Chew Choon Seng.

The college’s motto is Scientia imperii decus et tutamen, which translates as “Scientific knowledge, the crowning glory and the safeguard of the empire”.

Imperial’s most notable landmark is the Queen's Tower, a remainder of the Imperial Institute, built to mark Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee in 1887.

The Faculty The Faculty of Engineering, one of the founding faculties of HKU, is at the forefront of engineering research and education. It is among the largest faculties at the University, offering a wide range of undergraduate, postgraduate, and research degree programmes. In 2024–25, the Faculty enrolled over 7,500 students (approximately 37% undergraduate and 63% postgraduate) and attracted over HK$2 billion in research funding. The Faculty has more than 230 full-time professoriate and teaching staff, with strong links to industry, government, and international academic partners, and a thriving ecosystem for interdisciplinary innovation. The Department The Department of Data and Systems Engineering (DASE) (formerly the Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering) currently comprises around 20 core faculty members and serves approximately 200 undergraduate and 600 graduate students. DASE offers a portfolio of programmes including: BEng in Data and Systems Engineering MSc(Eng) in Industrial Engineering and Logistics Management MSc(Eng) in Robotics and Intelligent Systems MPhil and PhD programmes in related areas In the era of the artificial intelligence and big data revolution, DASE upholds the philosophy of 'computing-in-practice'. Its vision is to bridge the cyber and physical worlds by integrating data science methodologies (including AI and machine learning) with human-centric tools such as robots and intelligent systems to create greater value for humanity. To achieve this goal, DASE focuses on three key and rapidly evolving areas: Data Engineering and Analytics Human-Machine Cooperation Robotics and Automation DASE is well-positioned for significant growth in research, education, and impact, both within Hong Kong and internationally. They should have strong research experience in field-based marine ecology, including leading or coordinating marine or coastal fieldwork, and demonstrated experience with stable isotope analyses and related data analyses in ecological or biogeochemical contexts. A track record of question-driven research, as evidenced by publications or other research outputs commensurate with career stage, is expected. The successful candidate should have excellent communication, organizational and collaborative skills, and be able to work both independently and within an interdisciplinary team. The appointee will join an active research group at SWIMS and SBS working at the interface of marine ecology and conservation, with a particular focus on stable isotope approaches. They will contribute to the design, implementation and analysis of research projects on marine ecology and biogeochemistry using stable isotope tools, conduct and coordinate fieldwork in marine and coastal ecosystems, and carry out sample collection, processing and laboratory analyses. They will lead data analysis and contribute to the preparation of manuscripts, reports and grant proposals. The appointee will oversee junior research staff and research assistants, and will contribute to the supervision and mentoring of students involved in related projects. Example research focal areas such as trophic ecology, blue carbon ecosystems, and human impacts on coastal ecosystems are welcome, as are other innovative ideas that complement and extend existing work within SWIMS and SBS. The appointee will have opportunities to develop their own research agenda and to pursue new methods or interdisciplinary collaborations within the broader SWIMS and MSc environment. The appointee will be expected to contribute to research-led teaching and training associated with an MSc programme in marine ecology and conservation, through involvement in appropriate teaching activities, mentoring of MSc students and support for field- and project-based learning, as agreed with the programme leadership. They will be required to work at both the SWIMS facilities and on the main HKU campus and at field sites in Hong Kong and surrounding waters. A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits. The Department of Geography at Durham University seeks to appoint an Assistant Professor in Human Geography who has expertise in the field of Health Geography that will complement and extend our current work in our Geographies of Life research cluster.
