Heavy metal contamination and associated human health risks of spices

Spices are consumed daily in Bangladeshi households. Heavy metal ingestion—even in micro quantities—accumulates over time, leading to severe health complications such as kidney impairment, neurotoxicity, cardiovascular disorders, and elevated cancer risk.

By examining spices sold on digital storefronts, the study informs consumers about potential chemical hazards in online food purchases, encouraging greater vigilance regarding product branding, organic certifications, and vendor transparency.

While physical wet markets and grocery stores are periodically inspected by health authorities, digital e-commerce platforms often operate under lighter oversight regarding food chemistry and contamination.

The findings push e-commerce companies to implement stricter onboarding criteria for vendors, mandate batch-testing lab certificates, and establish quality assurance mechanisms before listing food items online.

The empirical data provides regulatory bodies—such as the Bangladesh Food Safety Authority (BFSA) and the Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI)—with concrete evidence needed to formulate heavy-metal threshold policies tailored to online grocery supply chains.

Authorities can use the findings to identify high-risk spice types and high-risk vendor categories, enabling targeted inspections and random market sampling. Heavy metal contamination in spices usually originates from polluted irrigation water, industrial soil runoff, unsafe pesticides, or deliberate adulteration during processing (e.g., adding lead compounds to enhance color). Highlighting these contamination risks pressures agricultural suppliers, millers, and processors to adopt safer farming practices, clean washing procedures, and non-toxic drying and packaging methods.

Combining e-commerce supply chain analysis with food safety and environmental chemistry represents an important research direction for developing economies where digital commerce is rapidly expanding.
