Traditionally, open surgery is associated with large incisions, significant postoperative pain and long recovery times. Even though laparoscopic procedures have reduced much of this surgical trauma for patients, the manoeuvrability of instruments is limited, particularly in narrow anatomical spaces. The Huaying Endoscopic Robotics Operation System, also known as HEROS, could herald new advances in natural orifice surgical robots.

Developed by researchers in the Faculty of Data Science at City University of Macau, the HEROS project aims to develop and commercialise a flexible robotic system capable of operating through the body’s natural orifices. It is designed to perform endoscopic submucosal dissection for early-stage gastrointestinal tumours – usually a technically demanding procedure – with precision and minimal scarring.
