Founded in 1877 as Western Canada’s first university, the University of Manitoba is located in Winnipeg, the capital of the Canadian province of Manitoba. It is a research-intensive public university.

The university serves nearly 30,000 students and around 15 per cent of the student body is made up of international students from 111 countries worldwide.

It offers a large study abroad programme where students can choose from 36 countries to take part in service-learning, internships, or exchange programmes.

The university also boasts one of the largest indigenous student populations in Canada, annually enrolling over 2,000 First Nations, Métis and Inuit students.

Manitoba offers more than 100 degree programmes and most of its academic departments include graduate study programmes.

There are 19 libraries at the university housing more than 2.5 million books. This includes more than 700,000 e-books and 70,000 journals.

Available to the public through the university’s digital collection are images, letters, books, newspapers, videos and sound recordings. The Icelandic Collection, home to nearly 27,000 volumes, is the second largest collection of Icelandic materials in North America and the largest in Canada.

The university attracts thousands of visitors each year and supports more than 20,000 local jobs. It claims that for every dollar it spends, $1.85 is generated for the local economy.

In the sports arena, within the elite interuniversity athletics programmes in Canada, Bison Sports – as Manitoba’s teams are known – has more than 360 athletes across nine disciplines. Bison teams have won 42 Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) national championships and its men’s football team has more alumni in professional sport teams than any other CIS team.

A total of 98 Manitoba’s students have been awarded the Rhodes Scholarship award – more than any other university in Western Canada.

Its alumni network comprises over 132,000 people in 131 countries and, in 2014, alumni and friends of Manitoba donated $26.6 million to its upkeep.

The Role and Department The Development and Alumni Relations Office is responsible for co-ordinating philanthropy, alumni and supporter engagement, advancement services, and supporter communications on behalf of the University. DARO works with colleges, academic departments, research centres and institutes, wider student experience partners, and professional departments to engage over 200,000 alumni and supporters around the world. In this role, you will manage a portfolio of some of the University's most senior benefactors and advocates, working closely with senior colleagues across the University but with a particular focus on our colleges and wider student experience activity. Your portfolio will primarily comprise individual donors, but may also include trusts and foundations, legacy and planned giving prospects, corporate donors/sponsors, and other philanthropic organisations. The Senior Development Manager will play a critical role in the delivery of Durham's bicentenary Campaign. The Campaign is a major philanthropic initiative centred on the University's 200th anniversary in 2032, seeking to create a step-change in philanthropic giving to Durham. As a University of Applied Learning, SIT works closely with industry in our research pursuits. Our research staff will have the opportunity to be equipped with applied research skill sets that are relevant to industry demands while working on research projects in SIT. The Research Fellow / Engineer (Building-Grid Interaction Design) will contribute to a two-year applied research project funded by the BCA, focusing on the development of a power grid interactive building or cluster of buildings. The role involves designing and implementing monitoring, visualization and control system to coordinate multiple energy sources including battery energy storage systems (BESS), solar PV, and diesel generators, and dynamically interacting with building management system to shed signficant loads under varying operating conditions. The research staff will develop, simulate, and test controller logic using MATLAB/Simulink or similar environments, analyse performance across diverse scenarios, and document results for technical reporting. This position is ideal for candidates with a strong foundation in modern facilities management, mechanical and electrical engineering and energy efficiency management.  Key Responsibilities Participate in the research project to design a microgrid controller for grid interactive building applications. Develop control algorithms for dynamic master selection, coordinating BESS, PV, diesel generators, and other sources. Implement predictive, rule-based, or optimisation-based control strategies using MATLAB/Simulink, Python, or embedded software tools. Integrate controller logic with the microgrid model and validate performance under different simulated conditions. Conduct testing of control strategies under various operating conditions such as extreme weather, load variation, equipment failure and deployment constraints. Prepare documentation, flowcharts, control logic diagrams, and controller specifications for the final report. Assist with procurement of software licences and technical equipment. Conduct Risk Assessments and ensure compliance with WSH regulations. Support supervision of capstone project students involved in the project. Work independently and collaboratively to maintain research software and project tools. To communicate and liaise with any internal and external stakeholders to ensure project deliverables are met. Any other ad-hoc duties assigned by supervisor. Job Requirements Bachelor’s degree or above in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field from a recognised university. Strong programming skills in MATLAB/Simulink, Python, C/C++, or similar environments. Understanding of control systems, power electronics, or energy management strategies. Experience in microgrid controller design is advantageous. Familiarity with BESS control strategies, SOC management, or optimisation algorithms preferred. Support supervision of capstone project students involved in the project. Ability to implement and test algorithmic logic using simulation tools. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and debugging skills. Excellent technical writing, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Key research areas include marine and arctic technology; energy technologies and systems; mechanical systems and mechatronics; and materials, manufacturing, and product development. We have strong links to industry, creating lasting impact in both business and society. We are now looking for a doctoral researcher in energy systems, life cycle sustainability, decision models, and investment pathways. The successful candidate will contribute to research on offshore-wind and Hydrogen integrated large-scale power-to-X pathways, with a focus on industrial applications and cross-border energy supply chain aspects. Your role and goals The work may focus on one or more of the following themes. P2X technology assessment and scenario modelling Techno-economic evaluation Sustainability analysis and life cycle assessment Uncertainty-based investment pathway modelling Multi-criteria decision making approaches and optimization System dynamics modelling Energy system resilience and risk assessment The research will heavily involve mathematical model development and the use of specialised software for impacts assessments, system dynamics, simulations etc. The researcher is also expected to carry out collaborative work with external stakeholders such as industry partners, depending on the project needs. Therefore, the work will also require ongoing stakeholder engagement and communication. The primary workplace is Aalto University’s Otaniemi Campus. The work requires in-person presence on the campus, due to the need for specialised software. The doctoral degree is granted after successfully completing a set of advanced taught courses (30 ECTS), writing a doctoral thesis (usually based on publications), and defending the thesis in a public examination. The primary objective of our research is to increase our understanding of the development and evolution of morphological traits of gnathostomes within a phylogenetic context.
