University of Bristol - Asian-crisis suicides revealed

Suicide rates increased as a result of the Asian economic crisis in 1997-98, but only in some of the countries affected, according to a study by academics at the University of Bristol. The research, conducted with Taiwanese partners, is the first comprehensive study of the Asian crisis' impact on suicide rates. It found an increase in the number of suicides in Japan, Hong Kong and South Korea, but not in Taiwan or Singapore. It is hoped that the research may have implications for understanding the impact of today's global recession on suicide rates.
