The UB, a history with a future

With 575 years of history, the University of Barcelona combines a long academic tradition with a firm commitment to innovation and social responsibility. As the leading university in Catalonia and a benchmark in Spain and Europe, the UB is defined by the quality of its teaching, the excellence of its research and the diversity of its community.

Its history has shaped a university open to the world and focused on the future — a place where knowledge, critical thinking and sustainability guide progress in education, science and society.

Excellence and Prestige

The University of Barcelona ranks first among Spanish universities in the most prestigious international rankings and is recognised worldwide for the quality of its teaching and research. Its academic excellence, innovative spirit and commitment to social responsibility place it among Europe’s leading higher education institutions.

The UB is a founding member of CHARM-EU, an alliance of nine prestigious European universities working together to build a new, inclusive and sustainable model for higher education. This collaboration reflects the university’s commitment to innovation, internationalisation and the values that drive the future of European universities.

Research Leadership

Research defines the University of Barcelona. With more than 7,700 scientific publications (Web of Science), 1,283 active research projects, 258 consolidated research groups and 16 research institutes, the UB is Spain’s leading university in research output. Its 750 doctoral theses read in 2023–2024 illustrate a dynamic and vibrant scientific community.

The UB is the only Spanish member of the League of European Research Universities (LERU), an elite network of Europe’s top research universities. Through LERU, the UB fosters international collaboration and innovation across disciplines. Its research addresses global challenges, from sustainability and health to technology and culture, aligning with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

Barcelona, Our Campus

At the University of Barcelona, the city itself becomes an extension of the campus. With teaching and research centres spread across different districts, the UB is woven into Barcelona’s urban fabric — from historic buildings in the city centre to modern facilities in the Science Park and the Bellvitge Health Sciences Campus.

Barcelona is a vibrant, multicultural city, known for its openness, creativity and Mediterranean lifestyle. Students enjoy a rich cultural life, excellent transport connections, and a perfect blend of tradition and modernity. For the UB community, the city is not only a place to study but a space to live, connect, and grow.
