Located in the city of Sheffield, South Yorkshire, the University of Sheffield is a public research university, a member of the Russell Group of research-led universities, and one of the UK’s original redbrick universities. It was first established in 1897 when the Sheffield Medical School, Firth College and the Sheffield Technical School joined forces to create the University College of Sheffield. It became the University of Sheffield just 10 years later and founded on the penny donations of Sheffield factory workers who hoped a university would benefit their children, health and local economy. Today the university teaches almost 30,000 students, including over 9,000 international students from 140 countries, and employs approximately 8,000 staff. Its academic departments are divided into five faculties: arts and humanities, engineering, medicine, dentistry and health, science and social sciences. Its motto translates as "To discover the causes of things". Sheffield can lay claim to six Nobel Prize winners among its alumni and faculty: Lord Florey for the 1945 Medicine/Physiology Prize, Sir Hans Krebs for the 1953 Medicine/Physiology Prize, Lord Porter for the 1967 Chemistry Prize, Sir Richard Roberts for the 1993 Medicine/Physiology Prize, Sir Harry Kroto for the 1996 Chemistry Prize and Professor Sir Fraser Stoddart for the 2016 Chemistry Prize. Among its alumni are the authors Hilary Mantel and Lee Child, the 2012 Olympic gold-winner Jessica Ennis-Hill, chemist and first Briton in space Helen Sharman, and the first woman to fly solo from Britain to Australia, Amy Johnson. Outside of the university itself, which ranks among the top in the UK for student experience, students at Sheffield can enjoy a thriving, cultural city with a reputation for being inexpensive. The city also benefits from its close proximity to the Peak District, a national park and area of outstanding beauty. It is also within striking distance of other major cities in the North of England, including Leeds, Manchester and Newcastle.

About us The post is based in the Centre for Society and Mental Health, a cross-Faculty initiative between the Faculty of Social Science and Public Policy (SSPP) and the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience (IoPPN). The centre aims to better understand the complex interrelationships between society and mental health, with a commitment to: Ensure that the impact of social context is central to how we understand mental health; Work in partnership with affected communities. About the role This is an opportunity to do important research on mental health, work and the benefits system, which both contributes to public/policy debates, and provides high-quality contributions to academic debates. You will work closely with Prof. Ben Geiger and Prof. Karen Glaser as part of the Centre’s ‘Work, Welfare Reform and Mental Health’ programme. This involves collaborating closely with an interdisciplinary team of researchers as well as the Centre’s academic and community partners, as part of the Centre’s wider ethos of coproduction. Using your experience in quantitative data analysis, you will examine the links between mental distress and work, care and welfare. You will take forward some selected pre-existing projects (e.g. on the relationship between mental distress and the evolving nature of work), can choose to contribute to other existing projects (e.g. the WelfareExperiences project), and take forward new ideas of your own that relates to these topics. There is an expectation that the post holder will develop independent research (including fellowship applications), with the support of Ben, Karen and the wider Centre. The post holder will commit 0.2 FTE of their time to the delivery of teaching in their faculty. This will be agreed with your line manager and may include teaching on a module and supervising dissertations and student projects. This is a full time post (35 Hours per week), and you will be offered a fixed term contract until April 2028 in first instance, view to extending subject to funding. About you We are asking candidates to demonstrate their experience on the following criteria: PhD, or in the final stages of obtaining a PhD, in a relevant area of social science (e.g., social policy, economics, demography, sociology, social statistics, social epidemiology). The primary responsibility of this role is to deliver on an academic research project funded by HTX, where you will be part of the research team under the project titled: Occupant Tenability and Time to Flashover in Small-Sized Flats (Numerical Study Phase) Under this job, you will develop a CFD modelling platform to study effects of different ventilation factors on an occupant’s tenability when trapped in the bedroom and have a reliable time to flashover within representative HDB units. Job Responsibilities: Participate in and manage the research project with Principal Investigator (PI), Co-PI and the research team members to ensure all project deliverables are met. Undertake these responsibilities in the project: Assists in co-supervision of final year projects (FYP) or capstone projects students under the Project PI. Meeting the deliverables by carrying out the computational simulations and experimental studies planned for under the scope of work of the projects within the timeframe to meet the deliverables. Assists the PI in drafting of reports, conference proceedings and journal articles based on the outcome of the projects. Prepares and shares fortnightly report of results from the computations with the PI. Carry out Risk Assessment, and ensure compliance with Work, Safety and Health Regulations. Coordinate procurement and liaison with vendors/suppliers. To communicate and liaise with any internal and external stakeholders to ensure project deliverables are met. Any other adhoc duties assigned by Supervisor. Work independently, as well as within a team, to ensure proper operation and maintenance of equipment. Job Requirements: Master or Ph.D (preferred) in Mechanical Engineering, Fire Engineering or related fields. Strong knowledge and experience in flashover/building fire simulation is high advantageous. Hands on experience on experimental studies Familiarity with CFD applications working on industrial related projects using high performance computing clusters would also be advantageous Strong foundation in Fluid Dynamics Strong prior experience in CFD – particularly in building fire combustion and spread. Strong skills in turbulence modelling, CFD mesh generation in complex 3D geometries. Proficient in handling large data sets and the ability to analysis and interpret results. Experience in commercial CFD package such as FDS and ANSYS package is preferred.
