Kyoto University is Japan’s second oldest university and one of Japan’s “National Seven”, founded as Kyoto Imperial University in 1897 on the island of Honshu, the nation’s ancient former capital.

Initially comprising the colleges of law, medicine, letters, and science and engineering, within two years the university had also opened a library and hospital. Soon afterwards, came faculties of economics, agriculture and humanities, while its first graduate school was launched in the mid-20th century.

Today, Kyoto has 10 faculties, 18 graduate schools and more research institutes – 14 in total – than any other Japanese university.

The institution is spread over three campuses: Yoshida, the main campus – dominated by the Clock Tower Centennial Hall, which dates back to when the university was first established – and two further bases at Uji and Katsura.

Kyoto itself is a city rich in culture and history, surrounded by mountains on three sides and bestriding the Kamo River. Architectural gems such as the Kyoto Imperial Palace – the former home of the Emperor of Japan – serve as a reminder of the city’s historical significance, while a number of its temples have been classed as Unesco World Heritage Sites.

Aside from the surroundings, many of its 23,000-strong student cohort, including around 2,000 international students, are attracted by the university’s reputation as a centre of research excellence: it has been home to nine Nobel prizewinners and two Fields medal recipients.

Kyoto University also houses the Hakubi Project, set up in 2009 to develop the talents of outstanding young researchers.

Notable alumni include film director Nagisa Oshima and novelist Kan Kikuchi.

Description The Advanced Materials and Building Efficiency Research Laboratory (AMBER Lab) at New York University Abu Dhabi seeks to recruit a postdoctoral associate to work on the development, characterization, and applications of sustainable construction materials derived from desalination waste. This exciting research will combine innovations in brine-to-cement technologies with advances in low-carbon binders such as reactive magnesium oxide cement (RMC) and belite-calcium sulfoaluminate (BCSA) systems. The successful applicant will contribute to four main research thrusts that are central to the success of this multidisciplinary project: (i) designing and developing chemical and ion-exchange processes for energy- and cost-efficient recovery of minerals and chemicals from desalination reject brine., (ii) utilizing recovered minerals such as brucite (Mg(OH)₂) and CaCO₃ to produce innovative building materials, including RMC- and BCSA-based composites, (iii) studying carbonation and hydration mechanisms in these sustainable binders at the nanoscale using advanced in-situ characterization techniques, and (iv) quantifying the environmental footprint of recovered materials through life-cycle assessment (LCA) and evaluating their economic feasibility through life-cycle cost analysis (LCCA). This position offers a unique opportunity to pioneer novel sustainable binders that directly address the dual challenges of brine management and CO₂ emissions reduction. The candidate will join a dynamic, multidisciplinary team of PhD-level scientists, graduate, and undergraduate students working at the intersection of water treatment, materials science, and civil engineering. Applicants should have experience in synthesizing and characterizing cementitious composites. Proficiency in characterizing construction materials micro/nanoscale experimental methods, such as XRD, SEM, TGA/DSC, NMR, or synchrotron-based techniques for hydration/carbonation studies is required. Experience with Portland cement, reactive MgO cements, belite-calcium sulfoaluminate (BCSA) systems, or other low-carbon binders is needed. A strong background in chemical precipitation, ion-exchange processes, mineral recovery, or related aqueous chemistry techniques is a plus. Familiarity with life-cycle assessment (LCA) and/or life-cycle cost analysis (LCCA) applied to construction materials will be beneficial for this project. Applicants should have an undergraduate degree and a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, Materials Science, or closely related fields. Candidates with outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, as well as problem-solving and decision-making abilities, are preferred. The UK Illicit Project is an NIHR funded 14-month pilot RCT of The Illicit Project-UK a school-based universal drug prevention and harm reduction intervention for older adolescents. The research follows on from an earlier feasibility study funded under the government's Innovation Fund to Reduce Demand for Illicit Substances. It is a collaboration between Liverpool John Moores University, Stirling University, the Matilda Centre at the University of Sydney, the University of Liverpool, and Queens University, Belfast. This is a fixed term post for 6 months. Work includes contributing to a pilot RCT of an effective Australian intervention for delivery in the UK. You will work with project researchers to liaise with local education and substance use leads and school staff to help recruit schools into the trial, and to update intervention materials, training packages, and research materials.
