The funding that supports this project has an expected end date of December 2030. The Position The Software Engineering Specialist will design, develop and maintain software systems for astronomical data acquisition, instrument control, and telemetry. They will work within project teams across the AITC, using their programming and problem-solving skills to deliver high-quality, robust, and well-documented code. They will have an initial focus on projects related to next-generation optical telescopes such as the Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT). The Person To excel in this role, you will have: Progress towards postgraduate qualifications in software engineering, computer science, astronomy & astrophysics, or related disciplines, OR a relevant undergraduate degree with a minimum of four years’ relevant experience in scientific and/or aerospace software development; Experience with at least one of Python, C, or C++, and with embedded systems and Unix environments; A track record of applying best-practice software development methodologies, including version control, robust testing, and detailed documentation; The ability to work across multi-disciplinary teams, and to manage workloads across multiple projects with minimal supervision; and, Experience in astronomical instrumentation, astronomical software, and/or spaceflight hardware/software would be favourably regarded. The Area The Advanced Instrumentation and Technology Centre (AITC) is national facility in Canberra and part of the Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics (RSAA). The Centre was established to support the development of the next generation of instruments for astronomy and space science. Our staff have built specialised astronomical instruments for some of the world’s largest optical telescopes; we are currently designing and building instruments to be mounted on the next generation of extremely large telescopes. The School The ANU Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics (RSAA) operates Australia’s national optical observatory and has access to the world’s largest optical telescopes. We are based at the historic Mount Stromlo Observatory on the outskirts of Canberra. Our staff and students have made major contributions to astronomy; our astronomers include winners of the Prime Minister’s Prize for Science and the Nobel Prize. It also works to ensure that the University makes a leading contribution to national policy in the relationship between Indigenous Australians and the nation. FNP provides an environment for debating significant and strategic issues and seeks to partner with communities, their representative organisations and enterprises to further the status, recognition and lives of Indigenous peoples. Achieving this outcome requires constant attention to impact, engagement and partnership. The Communications Coordinator will develop and deliver high-quality media and digital communications that elevate the University’s leadership in First Nations research and national policy engagement. The role will create compelling content, identify media opportunities, and strengthen FNP’s presence across print, digital and social platforms. Working closely with academic staff, media, ANU Communications and Engagement, and external stakeholders, the Communications Coordinator will ensure that the stories, research and priorities of the Portfolio reach diverse audiences, reinforce the University’s strategic objectives, and deepen engagement with First Nations communities. Position overview Reporting to the FNP Transition Lead, the Communications Coordinator plays a central role in shaping how FNP communicates its work, impact and strategic priorities. The position identifies newsworthy stories and media opportunities, produces media releases and digital content, manages FNP’s social media channels, and maintains and updates the FNP website. A key aspect of the role is building strong relationships with stakeholder organisations and ANU colleagues to ensure FNP voices and expertise are widely represented in national and local media. The role will work with University teams to formulate the Portfolio’s communication and engagement strategy, with particular focus on showcasing its impact of policy and research, to both internal and external audience.  With a strong editorial focus, the Communications Coordinator crafts clear, accurate and engaging content for multiple audiences, ranging from the ANU community and government to donors, corporate stakeholders, and national and international readers. The position requires a proactive communicator with strong networks, a capacity to work flexibly in a dynamic environment, and an understanding of First Nations issues and media. The Opportunity We are seeking a Research Fellow to participate in research on iron and steel decarbonisation between Australia and its major trading partners, centred on Japan, including some project management. The position is located within the Crawford School of Public Policy at the Australian National University. The position works closely with the Centre for Climate and Energy Policy (CCEP) within the Crawford School and other relevant researchers at the Australian National University. In this role you will work within a team to help develop models of green iron and steel markets or other models, help develop policy scenarios for use in analysis, contribute to the development of a stakeholder survey, and assist in the organisation and participation in externally-focused forums. Our Ideal Candidate Our ideal candidate will have a qualification in economics, public policy, engineering, or a related field. Experience in optimisation modelling, expertise in industrial decarbonisation and/or East Asia will be highly regarded, as will proficiency in Python, Julia, or RStats, and experience in industry engagement. Classification: Academic Level A Salary package: $87,135 - $109,369 per annum plus 17% superannuation Term: Full time, Fixed term (up to 36 months) Position Description and Selection Criteria: PD and PEWER Level A Postdoctoral Fellow_Magnetismpostdoc.pdf The Position The Postdoctoral Fellow will work within the research group of Professor Naomi McClure-Griffiths and Dr Craig Anderson and focus on measuring the magnitude and structure magnetic fields in the nearby Universe using Faraday Rotation. The work will revolve around the ASKAP Polarisation Survey of the Universe’s Magnetism, POSSUM. This position will focus on using POSSUM Rotation Measures to probe the magnetoionic medium in the Magellanic Clouds, the circumgalactic medium of galaxies and/or nearby galaxy groups. This will also include some technical work to enable the delivery of the POSSUM survey data products. The Postdoctoral Fellow is also expected to contribute to other areas of academic activity including education and service (including outreach). The Postdoctoral Fellow may also be required to supervise or mentor less senior staff, and undertake leadership roles as applicable. The staff member will contribute cooperatively to the overall intellectual life of the School, College and University.    The Person An outstanding Postdoctoral Fellow in the areas of Faraday rotation and/or extragalactic magnetism. The candidate will have (or shortly obtain) a PhD in astronomy or a related area, with a strong track record of research in the field of Radio Polarimetry and/or Faraday Rotation as evidenced by cited publications in peer-reviewed journals and conferences, a record of developing and maintaining collaborations and by other measures such as awards, and invitations to present at prominent conferences etc. The candidate will have a track record of articulating and prosecuting innovative research in the field of astronomy and demonstrated ability to lead and work as part of a team. The Postdoctoral Fellow will use ASKAP POSSUM data with a view to publishing original and innovative results in international refereed journals, present research at academic seminars and at national and international conferences, and collaborate with other researchers at a national and/or international level.   The School The Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics is a leading centre of Astronomy and Astronomical Instrumentation research in Australia.
