This text is an introduction to the fundamental concepts of continuous- time and discrete-time signals and systems - which treats them separately in a pedagogical and self-contained manner. The emphasis is on basic signal-processing principles, and underlying concepts are illustrated using practical examples from signal processing, multimedia communications and bioinformatics. The text is in two parts. The first covers the theories, techniques and applications of continuous-time signals and systems. The second discusses these topics for discrete-time signals. This allows continuous-time and discrete-time signals and systems to be taught independently or together.
