So Alan Sokal (Book of the Week: Beyond the Hoax, 13 March) continues to invite anyone who believes the laws of physics are "mere social conventions" to try jumping from his 21st-floor apartment. If he still thinks this is a valid argument, he is no doubt thankful to have learnt such laws before taking up residence there so long ago.
