The University of Szeged is a large research university located in Hungary’s Southern Great Plain.

It offers undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programmes across 12 faculties, spanning the arts, humanities, sciences and medicine.

Around one in 10 students are drawn from overseas, with around 100 countries represented in the student body, and a number of academic programmes are offered in languages other than Hungarian, including English and German.

The institution also has a strong reputation for industry collaboration and innovation, and hosts one of Europe’s most advanced laser research centres.

The University of Szeged traces its history back to 1872, with the foundation of the University of Kolozsvár, in what is now the Romanian city of Cluj-Napoca.

Following the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the institution moved to Szeged in 1921 as Franz Joseph University and shortly afterwards its most notable academic, Albert Szent-Györgyi, started work. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine in 1937, for identifying vitamin C and extracting it from paprika.

Franz Joseph University moved back to Cluj-Napoca in 1940 so the University of Szeged was formed in the old premises, mainly employing former staff Franz Joseph staff.

In 1962, the Szeged institution took on the name Attila József University, honouring a Hungarian poet who had been a student during the 1920s.

The name University of Szeged was readopted in 2000, when the university merged with a series of other higher education institutions in the city, including Albert Szent-Györgyi Medical University and Gyula Juhász Teacher Training College.

Szeged is Hungary’s third-largest city, with a population of around 170,000.

About us  King’s College London invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate (PDRA) in GeoAI and Spatial Epidemiology to join the GeoAI for Health Equity Lab (GAHEL, pronounced “gail”) led by Dr. Sabrina Li. The PDRA will contribute to Dr. Li’s UKRI-funded Future Leaders Fellowship project which focusses on integrating equity considerations into infectious disease mapping and surveillance, starting with the UK. The PDRA will be based in the Department of Geography, but will have access to training and support from King’s Health Partners Digital Health Hub, King’s Institute for Artificial Intelligence, and the Digital Futures Institute. The PDRA will also have access to research and career development from King’s Centre for Research Staff Development. The postholder will work closely with Dr. Li and in collaboration with national and international interdisciplinary partners based at the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), University of Cambridge, Imperial College London, and John Hopkins University (USA). About the role The PDRA will advance next-generation mapping methods for equitable and intelligent epidemic surveillance, contributing to the development of scalable GeoAI systems that improve understanding of health risks across populations and space. The PDRA will contribute to the development of a database of high-resolution equity indicators and apply cutting-edge GeoAI and spatial data science techniques to model and classify population health risk and disease dynamics at multiple spatial and temporal scales. The PDRA will lead the development of novel approaches for managing confidential spatial health data, including differential privacy and other secure geospatial data protocols. This research will advance our understanding of how major infectious diseases of concern in the UK emerge, spread, and unequally affect different individuals and population groups. Outcomes of this research will help advance the development of more equitable, spatial data-driven approaches to public health surveillance and pandemic preparedness, with direct links to public health policy. The findings will inform the development of a real-time spatial AI system to improve early detection and risk prediction, to protect vulnerable populations in the UK and in the future globally. This is a full-time post (35 hours per week), and you will be offered a fixed term contract until September 2030. Part time employment may be considered. Research staff at King’s are entitled to at least 10 days per year (pro-rata) for professional development. This entitlement, from the Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers, applies to Postdocs, Research Assistants, Research and Teaching Technicians, Teaching Fellows and AEP equivalent up to and including grade 7. About you To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience: Essential criteria PhD in spatial epidemiology, quantitative geography/remote sensing, ecology, statistics, engineering, quantitative social sciences, or a related discipline.  Experience in developing models and mapping with real world data, with strong programming proficiency in R or Python and version control systems like Git. Familiarity with spatial and statistical libraries (e.g. INLA, PyMC, scikit-learn, GeoPandas). Proven ability to work independently. Track record in publishing peer-reviewed papers. Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively within teams, with a strong commitment to fostering a fair and inclusive work environment. Excellent written and oral communication skills, including to diverse audiences.  Desirable criteria Experience managing stakeholder relationships and working in a practitioner/policy context. Experience working on interdisciplinary research projects. The position will be based in the School of Biosciences at the University of Surrey, but it will involve working closely with colleagues in the School of Veterinary Medicine. Description The RNA Modifications, Intellect, and NeuroDegeneration (RNA-MIND) Laboratory in collaboration with the Center of Brain and Health of New York University Abu Dhabi seeks to recruit a Research Assistant to join our laboratory focused on stem cell biology, neuroscience, and molecular mechanisms of human disease. The successful candidate will work with human cell lines, embryonic stem cells, and iPSCs, including their generation, characterization, and differentiation into cortical neurons and brain organoids. Experience with organoid culture, cryo-sectioning, microscopy, and MEA functional assays is highly desirable. Expertise in CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing (knockout and correction) and in NGS workflows—such as ChIP-seq, RNA-seq, miRNA-seq, single-cell RNA-seq preparation, and CUT&RUN—is strongly valued. Strong grounding in molecular biology techniques (Western blot, Northern blot, immunostaining, PCR/RT-qPCR, cloning, RNA work) is expected. The candidate will work in a multidisciplinary environment that includes collaboration with fellow post-doctoral associates, senior and junior scientists, and undergraduate students. They will also benefit from the support of established Core Bioinformatics and Sequencing Platforms and High-Performance Computing facilities.
