Brussels, 02 Mar 2005

The winners of the 2005 Dan David Prize have been announced, this year coming from the UK, Israel, the US and India.

Every year the US$1 million (0.76 million euro) prize is awarded in three categories: research addressing the past, the present and the future. While the winners clearly benefit from the prize, the next generation of researchers also gains, as each year the laureates donate 20 scholarships each to outstanding doctoral students throughout the world.

The 2005 prize for the 'past' goes to two archaeologists: Professor Israël Finkelstein from Israel, and Professor Graeme Barker from Cambridge University in the UK. Professor Barker was recognised for his work on the relationship between landscape and society, and in particular on the beginnings of farming and pastoralism, as well as the long term use of land and its environmental impacts.

The 'present' category for 2005 was the performing arts, and the winner is Peter Brook from the UK. He collects the prize for his outstanding contribution to the art of theatre and opera.

Materials science was selected as the topic for this year's prize for research in the 'future' category. The prize is to be shared by three researchers; two from the US and one for India (Professor Robert Langer, Professor George Whitesides and Professor C.N.R Rao). Their research addresses tissue engineering and novel biomaterials, novel functional materials and systems, and solid state and materials chemistry.
