Who got that job?

October 17, 2003

Carol Granger, 42

Job advertised, THES, November 22 2002

DE MONFORT UNIVERSITY
UK Human Tissue Bank (UKHTB)
Customer Liaison Manager
Circa £35,000
Fixed term - One year contract

The UK Human Tissue Bank at De Montfort University provides healthcare researchers with donated human tissues that are unsuitable for transplantation. It wanted a researcher liaison manager, someone who would understand the needs of the research community, says Samantha Orr, the organisation's director. Carol Granger was chosen "because of her marketing and networking skills and her commitment to the business and mission of UKHTB".

The UKHTB insists on high ethical standards for tissue collection. All donors must give informed consent for research use. "We have custodianship of the donation and must ensure that it is used responsibly and ethically," Granger says. "I support researchers and their applications for ethics approval from the local National Health Service. I also manage communications."

After university, Granger taught for a while before joining an industrial research department. Then, "I became interested in laboratory alternatives to animal testing. After three years in the diagnostics industry, I moved into medical devices. I took redundancy from a technical director post in NovemberI when the tissue bank job was advertised."

Much of her work is done from home, but each week she visits a researcher and spends a day or so at the Leicester office. "The variety is welcome.

And the work is what I make it. I've been given scope to develop the role."

The past year has taught her that "redundancy in mid-career can be good for you", that "working from home is not perfect" and that "the university sector, De Montfort at least, has outgrown the ivory-tower image and has some features of industry".
