Cardiff University said this week that its recent creation of departmental "eco-champions" has already paid dividends. In the first six months of 2007 the university's gas consumption fell 15 per cent, while electricity usage fell by 2 per cent against 2006. Cardiff has also launched an energy, water and waste initiative aimed at saving 26,000 tonnes of carbon over five years.
