Vice-chancellors' pay: clarification

* The vice-chancellor of South Bank University earned a total Pounds 125,000 for 1998-99, including benefits, performance-related pay and pension contributions. The principal of the Royal Northern College of Music earned Pounds 74,048, an increase of 12.5 per cent on the previous year. Tony Wood, former vice-chancellor of Luton, has asked us to point out that his retirement was initiated "entirely at his own wish" and the Pounds 75,000 he received was his salary up to his retirement. London Business School's dean's salary is not from public funds.
